Getting our daily bread is far more complicated now than those times we just used to go to the shops. Nowadays we take great care when we go shopping, even donning masks and cleaning what we have when we return. I’d like to share some resources I’ve found along with our amazing South African mom bloggers who have helped me compile this list.
Plan ahead
Adrienne is the meal planning queen and I think it’s very valuable to start with her post, Lockdown, Shopping and Covid 19. She has some good tips for not only the shopping experience but for stretching your food productively.
If you are venturing out be sure to be protected. Check out Ursula’s post on making a mask.
Supporting local restaurants
Supporting your local restaurants who are now out of work is the theme of Natasha’s post and it’s quite a clever and useful idea from Denny Mushrooms.
Who is delivering?
- Your normal supermarkets have delivery options but remember to plan this in advance as they do have a high demand right now.
Checkers has a 60 minute service for Cape Town CBD, Sea Point, Rondebosch, Constantia, Bellville, Durbanville, Brackenfell, Milnerton, Bryanston, Melrose & Sunninghill.
They have a same day service for Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Centurion, Pretoria North & Pretoria East. (This is information from their website and may not apply during the lockdown)
Woolworths is delivering – they have slots you have to fill. Limited to certain urban areas.
Pick n Pay is delivering. They have a drop down menu so you can check if they will deliver to you.
If you are in Port Elizabeth a great service is Food to your Door.
- Delivery services will also be active not only for food but for essential items.
Check out Uber Eats – Tanya did a post on this.
Read her post for more information. You can also request contactless drop off where they leave it at your door / gate.
- Fresh meal kits delivered
Now if I was still living in Joburg I would seriously use Daily Dish. Not only are they licenced to produce their meal kits during this time (Mon-Thurs) but they also now have added in an extra braai pack and make your own pizza pack.
Friday Pizza Night Add-On
You can now enjoy artisanal pizza in the comfort of your own home – no takeaways required. We’ll send you all the freshest and finest ingredients you need to have a delicious, fun-filled pizza night: Bases, sauces, cheese and toppings for 2 or 4 people. Choose between a smoky paprika pepperoni, or a chard, caramelised onion and salty feta vegetarian pizza.
The Weekend Braai Pack Add-On
Everything you need for a lekker weekend braai, without the trip to the shops! We’ll send you a tasty selection of braai meats and sides: herby lemon marinated chicken kebabs, plaas thin and juicy boerewors and spiced lamb loin chops, crispy garlic bread and roasted new potato, sweet butternut and teriyaki salad.
I’ve reviewed them a number of times and you can check out my posts on SA Mom blogs (the Family box) and One Step at a Time (when I did the Low Carb one). They also generously donated food packs to our #JoziMeetup as well.
The really nice thing about them is the quality of their food and quantity is good too. Go to Daily Dish for more info.
- Takealot is also delivering essential items. They also do printer ink. And masks.
- Netflorist is too.
Once all your goodies arrive, here is a useful video about disinfecting them. As a counter to that this article says that we don’t need to go crazy disinfecting stuff.
Dr. David Aronoff, director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center:
“Time is really on your side here.” That’s because as soon as the virus lands on a surface, it starts to lose infectiousness. “After 24 hours, the vast majority of virus is no longer infectious,” he says. And after 72 hours, he notes that research has found the virus is trace or undetectable on most surfaces. So if you know that you’re not going to use a can of soup for two or three days, he says, just put it away, wash your hands and go about your day. And one more thing: Make sure to wipe down your countertops after you unpack, using a household disinfectant registered with the Environmental Protection Agency.
Disclaimer: Please note that I’m not a doctor or an expert, use your own discretion with this information, as well as with the masks.
