We are living in crazy times and now is not the time to judge how many hours your kid is watching TV when you’re trying to homeschool and work without your normal help and keep yourself sane. So here is the South African mom blogger list of screen suggestions to help you get some work done.
- Da Vinci is a channel on DSTV which has educational material. Mira at Real Life Mum has a post about 6 of their programs which include science experiments, career opportunities, world history and the human body.
Mira also did a whole post on 35 online resources a month ago.
2. Feel like a field trip from the comfort of your home? Virtual museum and other tours: Jolene over at Monsters Ed has put together two posts on this.
Her first post is about museums such as NASA, Natural History Museum, the Smithsonian, London Zoo, Art Galleries and the Vatican Museum.
The second one has more museums but also field trips such as the Great Wall of China and even accessing Curiosity which is going around on the planet Mars.
3. Educational resources: Luchae over at My Spreadsheet Brain has collected five great sites to help school your kid from Vodacom to the Department of Education.
4. Books: Julie has some good resources including ones you can listen to on this Free Online Lockdown Links for Kids post.
5. Dstv Now app also has a free version for non subscribers.
MultiChoice has added additional educational content to the free service with the Mindset PoP channel. This channel features educational programming covering the entire General Education and Training (GET) phase, including Early Childhood Development (ECD), as well as a key focus on the Grade 4 – 9 curriculum.
The channel aims to prepare children for when schools reopen. Mindset PoP will deliver live lessons daily, with six fresh hours every day. A website is available for parents to download worksheets and information sheets to work through with expert teachers. Lessons are based on the South African Curriculum Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) and are also aligned to the Cambridge curriculum.

6. Another good South African resource is Smartick which is a great way to keep the Maths going. It’s a good habit you can use for just 15 mins at a time. Due to the COVID-19 school closings, Smartick’s team wants to show their support by offering the method for FREE, during the official school closings, for 15 days.
