Learning emotional intelligence is a life long skill and it’s never too early to teach it to your kids. This was a surprising discovery of reading “Remy a book about believing in yourself.” We are giving away two books on the blog today.
I know it’s important to teach Nicky not to over-react but I never really considered the tools needed to teach him this and this story really helps with that. Not only that, it highlights a very important component. When I asked him what he liked about the book he said “It’s about building your confidence.”
Let’s meet the main character in the book, Remy:
Remy was an eleven-year-old boy who lived in the beautiful
coastal town of Timberland with his parents. He was smart and
intelligent, but he was an unhappy boy. He lacked self-confidence
and had no control over his emotions. It took very little effort
for anyone to get a reaction out of him. The reason for this was
Remy’s insecurity about his looks.
Remy is someone who always reacts to the school bullies. And as much as he feels bad about it afterwards, and his mother tells him not to, he seems to have a bit of a short fuse and a sensitivity about who he is.
That’s until a wise old owl visits him and encourages him to accept himself for who he is.
“But I knew I was made different for a reason. I knew there
must be something special and extraordinary that I was meant
to do. So I didn’t lose heart… Accept yourself and be proud of
what you have because that’s what makes you YOU!”
This encounter with the owl sets Remy off onto a new pattern of thinking. He becomes proud of who he is and doesn’t respond to the bully’s taunts. That’s until they really push him too hard and he’s back in square one again.
This time he turns to his mother who has some really useful suggestions. She encourages him to accept his emotions. One of the tools she uses is yoga. Now I enjoy doing my yoga with GIJess on a Saturday but I didn’t give it much thought that it would benefit Nicky too. Since reading this book I’ve printed out a few poses for him that will help in calming him down as he moves his body.
I think this is a valuable book for all of us as adults too especially in distressing situations. If we are calm and stable in who we are we don’t need to over-react. It’s often fear and a lack of confidence in ourselves that makes us lose the plot. But with acceptance of our emotions and all the different parts of ourselves we have the ability to become a better role model for our kids too.
The book is currently available on the Amazon Kindle store, Rakuten Kobo and direct from Kaori Mai Publishing.
