South African mom blogger Melissa Javan is filling in for me while I am visiting my husband in hospital. She tells us about the event and which toys she liked the best.
“I think it’s important that the power of curiosity is nurtured,” said the MC The Napsta at the Prima Top Toys event, held in Johannesburg. He spoke of how his mother supported the different phases he went through.
When he was into music, she would buy him a keyboard for example. When he was into soccer, she bought him a ball. She had supported and nurtured every phase her child went through, said MC The Napsta.
Gosh, this story made me feel so warm. I thought of my mother and also of how I should implement the same behaviour – to support and nurture my child’s curiosity.
Anyway, I was invited to the brand Prima Toys’ event last week where we were showed the Top Toys of the 2018 festive season.
At this event, we were spoiled with the “Carnival” theme. We had popcorn, we had games to play and prizes to win. It was a lovely surprise and really fun. The theme reminded us that you’re never too old to play.
MC The Napsta reminded us the playing: that it helps to build self-confidence helps with people skills and role-playing.
John Jordaan, MD of Prima Toys, spoke about how children are learning through robotics. “Kids are learning sequencing. It’s basic programming. These are skills kids are learning without even knowing it.”
According to Jordaan, the “hot” toys this year include those you can unbox – the LOL toy for example; also the collectables and figurines like Ben10 and Disney Princesses.
Jordaan also told us that Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday is celebrated later this year.
The following are the favourites on my list:
For Girls:
Baby Love’s Tasha or Bella or Thando dolls. I think Tasha or Bella can speak Afrikaans and English. Thando speaks isiZulu and English. I won a Thando doll at the event and I absolutely love her for my two-year-old daughter. The dolls says phrases like “I’m tired” or “What’s your name” or “How are you” in English and then in isiZulu. She also comes with a food plate, spoon and fork, and a dummy.
Little Live Pets. We have a puppy of this toy series at home. He runs around and barks like a real puppy. We love it!
Baby Secrets Merbaby is a toy I like for myself. She just looks so cute and reminds me of the classic movie “The Little Mermaid”.
Scruff-a-Luvs furry dolls teach children about rescuing and adopting pets. It’s a cute furry pet (dog or cat) that you can actually play with in the water.
For Boys:
Trixx360. You can build your own Trixx360. This toy looks like heaps of fun!
Treksta. This is a robotic dog that barks, stretches, sits and does a 360 backflip.
For toddlers:
Leapfrog scoop ice cream trolley. This is so cute. It helps the little one to measure the ice cream scoops! And the colours- I love it!
VTech Toot-toot driver station and airport looks very interesting.
In our goodie bags we received from Prima Toys, my favourite is the stretched Superman-figurine (you can actually stretch him like you would a stress ball). My toddler’s favourite is the Leapfrog Chat and Count Smart Phone. She loves singing and dancing to the Count-to-ten song.
