Nicky has a really nice lunch box with jungle animals on it. The problem is that over time the catches of the lunch box have come off. So I’ve still been using it with various other containers inside, but nothing on the sandwich which means it really doesn’t last through the school day unsealed and he doesn’t eat it. I can’t blame him for not wanting to eat stale samies so I’ve come up with a good solution: Glad bags. Glad bags are the solution to keep your child’s food fresh and organised in their bag. SA Mom Blogs is also giving away a selection of Glad bags worth R250.
A while back I wrote a post on One Step at a Time about the components of making up a lunch box. The idea is to do half fruit and veg, one quarter starch, one quarter protein, one Tablespoon good fat (e.g. nuts, seeds, mayo, avo) and a drink.
For this post for Nicky’s lunchbox I did a sandwich (starch) which has cheese (protein), tomato and lettuce (veg) in it. I also did pineapple (fruit) and cucumber (veg) in the box. As an extra I’ve also given him some biltong and dried apricot as a bit of a treat because this box is for his first afternoon doing sport in case he is extra hungry before that. He also always has his water bottle.
All of these I have popped into the medium (180 x 190 mm) resealable sandwich bags.
Another cool item from Glad that I found at the supermarket are “Rainbow” sandwich bags (220 x 220 mm). These don’t seal with a zip lock but they do have awesome colours and cute stickers for your kid to send them a cool message at snack time. It’s also a nice way of organising lunches if you are doing it for several kids – you can colour code each kid into having their own colour so they know which sandwich is theirs. They have blue, purple, orange and light green.
I took some pictures so you can see the bags as well as the stickers.
I also bought some “small” freezer bags (200 x 250 mm) . They are just good to have around if you want to separate meat or other items in your freezer.
Having some Glad bags in your kitchen is a must for those occasions where you want to keep your food fresh for longer. They can also be an excellent addition to your child’s lunch box.

I use the zip locks for just about everything – storing flashcards, food and even my knitting projects. The rainbow bag and stickers look cute.

I love those rainbow sandwich bags. My son’s grade donates sandwiches to the local government hospital every term. So I use the rainbow packet with a pretty sticker to bring a smile to someone’s face. Also use them on days when my boys go on field trips.
