Today we meet South African mom blogger Karen, who blogs at Mommy in Cape Town.
1.What do you normally get up to on an average day (tell us a bit about yourself)?
My life is rather unglamorous as a Stay at Home Mom.
I’m usually the first awake in the house. I let the dog out and then head off to the kitchen to make coffee and pack my daughters’ lunch.
Then I must wake up Hubby and my daughter.
I will drop my daughter at school. Usually I will go for a run or go to gym, if I don’t have any events or meetings.
Then its answering emails, cleaning the house and running errands.
Around 12:00 I fetch my daughter from school. Lunch at home. I will do an art/craft activity with my daughter or let her play in the garden.
When its a bit cooler in the afternoon we will either take the dog for a walk or go to the beach.
Then its bath time and then I prep dinner. While I prep dinner, I allow my daughter screen time and she can watch some TV.
Its not very exciting but it is my life and currently I’m very happy with our little routine.
2. How do you feel about motherhood – what are your struggles and joys?
I could not imagine my life without my daughter. I still am amazed how such a little person can turn your life upside down and make your life evolve around them. Motherhood has mostly been a joy.
I have struggled with the loss of identity outside of the “motherhood” title. Recently I have become a Stay at Home Mother and I am finding it has its own set of struggles as being a working mother.
I also struggle with the bad habit of comparing my parenting to other moms. Always worrying if I am doing enough to help my daughter. Should I read more books to her, should I do more craft projects, should she be in more extra murals …
The joys of parenting outweigh the struggles (at the moment) I’m loving the space my daughter is in. She has started to express her personality.
3. Tell us about your kid(s)
My daughter Emily will be 4 years old in March. She is a very busy little girl who loves the outdoors. She is happiest when she is swimming, on the beach, climbing anything and with her dog Shumba. Emily loves animals. She is a bit timid in large groups.
4. How did you start blogging?
I used to work in Public Relations, so I have been exposed to blogging but didn’t really have the time to pursue it. When I became a Stay at Home Mom, I decide to start my blog so I could have a creative outlet. When I started my blog, I have so many thoughts and feelings that I just needed to get out of my head. I found blogging therapeutic.
5. Share with us a valuable blogging tip you’ve learnt. (or more)
The most valuable blogging tip I can share is to be authentic. Don’t try to be something you are not. People can spot inauthenticity a mile away.
You will also become exhausted putting up the façade.
6) If you make money from your blog, give us a breakdown on how you do it. Give us some of your methods on how to get started on this, or any tips or advice.
Still trying to make money from my blog.
