How to Keep Adult Wellness Products Safely Away From Children

July 20, 2026 by Heather Step Leave a Comment

This is a collaborative post.

Our homes are filling up with all sorts of adult wellness and self-care products these days. That means it’s more important than ever to keep them safely away from curious kids. Things like vitamins, supplements, tinctures, and edibles can look pretty tempting to little ones. But don’t worry, you don’t need to completely redo your home to make it safe. Just a few consistent habits and smart storage ideas will do the trick.

This guide will give you practical, easy ways to store your wellness products securely. That way, you can feel good knowing your home is a safe spot for everyone in the family.

Why Safe Storage is Non-Negotiable

Kids, especially toddlers and preschoolers, love to explore everything with their hands and mouths. They’re naturally curious and can’t tell the difference between a piece of candy and a gummy supplement. Something that’s good for an adult could be harmful to a child who eats it, even a tiny bit.

So, setting up clear safety rules is super important. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that about 50,000 young children end up in the emergency room each year because they got into medicines when an adult wasn’t looking. Even though many adult wellness products aren’t prescription meds, the idea of safe storage around kids still applies. The best way to stop accidental ingestion is to treat all adult-only items with this much care.

Out of Sight, Out of Reach: The Golden Rule

The most basic rule for childproofing is to keep anything potentially dangerous out of sight and out of reach. If kids can’t see something or get to it, they’re much less likely to get into it. This means don’t leave products on nightstands, low coffee tables, or kitchen counters where a child could easily grab them.

This is extra true for things that look like treats, such as flavored oils, colorful capsules, or even some adult wellness products like THC CBD gummies. A high cabinet shelf, ideally one that an adult needs a step stool to reach, is a great place to start. Always put these items back in their original, child-resistant packaging right after you use them.

Choosing the Right Storage Solutions

High shelves are good, but it’s always smart to add another layer of security, especially as kids get older and become better climbers. Getting a small lockbox or a cabinet with a childproof lock adds an extra barrier.

Here are a few things you could use:

  • Lockable Pouches or Bags: These are perfect for smaller items and are often easy to carry, which is handy for travel.
  • Medicine Lockboxes: You can find these in different sizes and keep them hidden away in a closet or on a high shelf.
  • Cabinet and Drawer Locks: You can install magnetic or adhesive locks on your existing cabinets to secure them without needing to drill anything.

These simple tools help you create a secure home environment, giving you full control over who can get to certain products. Pick something that fits your life and that you can easily use all the time.

Talk to Your Kids About “Grown-Up” Products

As your kids get bigger, you can start talking to them about safety in ways they can understand. You don’t need to explain what every product is for. Instead, focus on one simple, clear rule: some things are just for grown-ups.

You can compare it to other things they already know, like your morning coffee or the cleaning supplies under the sink. Explain that these items aren’t toys or treats, and they should never touch them without asking a parent first. Remind them to always ask you or another trusted adult if they find something they don’t recognize. These chats teach them about staying safe and respecting boundaries.

What About When You Travel?

Keeping up your safety routine when you travel or visit other people is just as important. A house that isn’t childproofed, like a grandparent’s home or a vacation rental, can have new dangers. Pack your wellness products in a lockable travel bag or a toiletry case that you can keep zipped up inside your luggage.

Never leave products loose in a purse or backpack where a child might rummage through. When you get to your destination, quickly look around the room and put your bag on a high shelf in a closet or in a drawer that a child can’t easily get into.

Regularly Review Your Home’s Safety

Kids grow and change so fast. A cabinet that was once out of reach might become accessible once they learn to pull a chair over. Make it a habit to regularly check your storage spots. Are they still secure? Have you gotten a bit too relaxed and started leaving things out?

Set a reminder every few months to do a quick safety check of your home. Look at your locks, check your high shelves, and make sure everyone in the house is still following the rules. Being diligent like this means your safety systems will grow right along with your child.

Keeping adult wellness products secure is a simple way to show love and responsibility. Building these small habits into your daily life helps you enjoy your self-care routines while making sure your little ones stay safe and sound.

While Nicky has been away playing tennis at Cradock I've been alone at home and it wasn't as bad as I thought. I opened up extra slots on a Friday night but the jokes on me as my regulars just moved themselves there. 😂
Mittens was confused and waited for Nicky. He is even sleeping in the donut beds I bought due to the cold. Finally.
Anyway I am glad to have Nicky back and let him play some airsoft on Sunday. He had fun.
Happy Monday everyone. How was your weekend?

Just to say, two weeks ago I didn't post any photos. We had an awful time in Uitenhage and for the first time actually skipped a round and went home early enough before it got dark.

Just remember that winning only comes after those tough times.

OH and my wall is finally up! Major victory!

When life is good for your child it's good for you When life is good for your child it's good for you.

I really feel like we turned a corner this weekend.
After days of pain, Nicky had dental work done and he is no longer in pain. Such a nice emergency dentist who met us on Saturday afternoon to get things done.
Also the airsoft gun is finally working!
After weeks of getting the charger sorted we realised the batteries weren't fitting in the gun. Thank God for Linda and her crew at @planet_paintball.pe who exchanged a part to make the whole thing work and let Nicky try it out with some other people. At no cost. We are so grateful.

Last Sunday night we heard a crash but I thought it was from the other side. I thought I should look at my phone to see what was going on and saw missed calls from my neighbor.

Some guy had literally driven into my wall.

So while we have been dealing with fixing walls, insurance claims and a lot of follow up, what is a girl to do but take refuge in a chocolate desert?
