Today we meet a mom who handcrafts adorable products for moms, babes and tots.
- Tell us about yourself, a bit of background.
We are a mother and daughter team running the online store Moo Cachoo, we both have a passion for creating beautiful unique items – I think it is a gene passed down from my granny. The creative field has always taken up our time as a hobby- sewing, designing, art or knitting. We feel very fortunate to have our passion turn into a opportunity.
- What were you doing before you started this business?
I was working as a High School Visual arts teacher, and after having my first baby I couldn’t see myself going back after my maternity leave and my mom was working for my dads business. My hubby suggested staying home to raise our daughter and encouraged us to bring our brain child business to life too.
- Is your business full time or part time and why?
It’s part time – my first priority at this stage is caring for our two young girls, but we are hoping to grow the business for when we have more time to invest into it. My mom also has a part time job, so Moo Cachoo work duties happen when she has a chance and usually early hours of the morning 😉
- How do you juggle the responsibilities of being a mom with your work?
There is a saying “it takes a village to raise a child” well it’s so true, I am very grateful for a really great support system of family that all live close by to give a helping hand. And most times I find I land up burning the midnight oil to get the piles of work done, when the house is quiet.
- How do you get clients/ market yourself?
We find the social media platform of Facebook as our best communication and marketing tool. We also find doing Mommy markets and the MamaMagic baby expo crucial for us being an online store so our customers can see our products and the quality firsthand and validate the legitimacy of our business.
- What’s your biggest challenge right now?
Sourcing fabrics, and suppliers. Getting our products into retail stores, and the challenge of trying to balance being a wife and mom to a toddler and newborn.
- Did you need a lot of money to start off? And how long was it before you made a profit?
The business saw a profit after our first expo a few months after launching. We injected all the capital back into the business to grow it further. The business has been paying for itself monthly since. We have chosen not to draw salaries as yet and instead keep investing it back into the business.
- What makes your business unique from other brands?
We have tried to make the fabulous trending products on Pinterest unique and relevant to South African parents. We have personally tried and tested them all to only provide our customers with practical and beautiful items that will make parenting a little bit easier and stylish.
- Share with us your social media links and website.
