Today we are lucky enough to meet Teresa Ulyate, South African mom blogger and food blogger from Cupcakes and Couscous, to share a bit more about her blog and her life…
1) What do you normally get up to on an average day? (Give us a brief description about yourself)
I am a stay at home / work from home mom and every day is a little different depending on what’s on the schedule. It is pretty much a juggling act of children, errands, chores and blogging so there is never a dull moment!
2) How do you feel about motherhood – what are your struggles and joys?
Wow, what a ride it has been! I am always amazed at the heart’s capacity to grow and feel such unconditional love for not one but two other little people! Being an introvert, I do sometimes struggle with the lack of alone time and also feeling as though I can never start and finish a task without being interrupted constantly, but I am so grateful to be at home with the children in these precious early years and would not change it for anything.
3) Tell us about your kid(s)
I have two children. My eldest, Maggie, is four years old and is a spirited and determined little soul. She keeps me on my toes, but also amazes me with her observations of the world, her compassion and her sense of humour. My youngest, James is almost two and is the sweetest, kindest little thing. He loves his books, helping me around the house and always has hugs and kisses for his family, my heart!
4). How did you start blogging?
I started blogging around the time of Maggie’s first birthday. I had thought about doing it for a while but was nervous about putting myself out there. After being encouraged by friends I started out with the main aim of having a creative outlet – little did I know that a few years later I would turn it into a business!
5) Share with us a valuable blogging tip you’ve learnt. (or more)
Gosh, I have learnt so much in the last few years. I suppose the biggest piece of advice would be to keep at it! Blogging is a marathon, not a sprint but if you keep going and producing quality content the readers will come. Also, practice your craft! Read as much as you can, do a photography course, read articles about blogging – it all helps! And network as much as you can, I have met an amazing bunch of bloggers and influencers and am so grateful to be part of that community.
6) If you make money from your blog, give us a breakdown on how you do it. Give us some of your methods on how to get started on this, or any tips or advice.
I have been quite lucky in the past to have been approached by companies (who found my blog online) to develop recipes and work on food writing assignments. That said, I am now making more of an effort from my side by registering on sites like Webfluential and SABizChat to proactively seek out opportunities.
You can find Teresa on her blog, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram. Watch out for some recipes from Teresa on our blog later in the week.

Thank you Lauren and Francesca for your kind comments! I’m glad you enjoyed the post and wish you both luck with your blogs – keep on swimming! 😉

I really enjoyed reading your answers, Teresa. Awesome to hear that you simply followed your passion, and work started flowing in. I totally agree with the sentiment on your headline. The more I work on my websites, the more work there seems to be. I look forward to the day I can show my husband that my “hobby” has turned into a business. 😉

Hi Teresa,
Thank you for the inspiration. I too feel the fear of blogging since I am new to It but you and your DEVINE blog have given me a lot more confidence to keep going.
Love It
Francesca
