You’d be surprised how much sun seeps into the car while you are driving around. This has an effect not only on sunburn but also increasing the temperature inside a confined space. If you’re looking for options to keep your little one out of the glare of the sun the Window Apron is the right way to keep them shady and secure.
I met Stephen Maponya, the man behind these shades, and he showed me how easy it is to install them. He also told me a bit why these particular window shades are superior to anything else on the market.
He held the material up to the sun to demonstrate how it really blocks it out. Once installed you can still see through them, although it’s definitely dark.
The other nice thing is that they are fastened really securely to the rubber frame of the door with velcro tabs. He explained how these tabs will last at least 6 months. There are also several of them all around the frame which gives extra security.
They are also made from very durable material which won’t fray.
More information on the shades:
-
- Allows opening and closing of the car window;
- Covers the entire aperture of the door frame and therefore offers maximum cover;
- Is not susceptible to flapping about while car is moving;
- Has stabilisers which help keep it in shape;
- Keeps the interior of the car cooler;
- Lasts longer due to indirect exposure to harsh weather conditions, being fitted on the inside of the window;
- Window can be opened with the sun shades in place;
- The mechanism for securing the sun shades to the vehicle window is not susceptible to slipping off, particularly where the vehicle door is of an exceptional shape;
- The customised design offers an elegant, classy look.

Stephen gave me a demonstration about how you put them on. You put the window apron on with the attachments so that you can stick them on. He uses a special glue.
You then take the whole thing off, leaving the velcro strips on to dry. You leave it for 24 hours and then you can pop it back on. There’s a special technique whereby you attach it to the corner, in order to get it straight. The trick is to make sure the label is facing you on the inside.
After I put it on it really made a difference to the temperature inside the car. And Nicky is going to be nice and shady in there. After all we have a very long car trip in our future driving down in December (with the dog too!) So these shades will really help.
The shades are custom made to the make of the car. Stephen told me he only can’t do those fold down cars. He has done one without the rubber frame but it was very challenging.
