Every month, millions of South African moms stretch the same few hundred rand across groceries, transport, school needs and nappies. If you are the one holding the household together, the SASSA Child Support Grant exists for exactly that — and too many moms either don’t know they qualify, or put off applying because the process looks complicated. It isn’t.

How much is the Sassa Child Support Grant?
R580 per child, every month. The increase came in April 2026 — nothing changed in October, so the amount stays the same going into November. The grant is paid to the caregiver — you — not to the child, so you decide how it is spent.
Who qualifies for the child support grant?
You must be the child’s primary caregiver — the person who feeds, clothes and looks after them day to day. That can be a mother, father, grandmother, aunt, or any relative. The child must be under 18 and living with you in South Africa, and you must pass SASSA’s means test: your income must be below R5,800 a month if you are single (about R11,600 for a married couple). More than 12 million children receive it — it is South Africa’s largest social grant.
How to apply
Applying is free. Take your ID, the child’s birth certificate (or proof of birth registration) and proof of your income to your nearest SASSA office, or start on the official SASSA services portal. A SASSA official will help you complete the forms — and never pay anyone to “help” you apply. Anyone asking for an application fee is running a scam.
Two things moms often get wrong
First, you do not lose the grant if your child misses school. SASSA may ask for proof of school attendance, but missing school does not stop the payment. Keep them in school because it shapes their future — not because the grant forces you to. Second, if you are raising an orphaned relative’s child, ask about the R290 top-up — it raises the grant to R870 a month for that child.

When is the child support grant paid?
Children’s grants are paid this month on Tuesday 3 November 2026. The November dates were moved because of the 4 November elections — the normal schedule returns in December.
A monthly help
R580 will not cover everything. But R580 arriving every month, on time, turns the school-shoe maths from impossible to manageable. If you think you might qualify, apply — the money is there for your children.
