{Guest Post} Growing With Your Marriage

February 12, 2018 by Heather Step 1 Comment

This post was written by South African mom blogger Prudence Cele, who blogs at Ms Dzo.

Oh how I love spring: beautiful flowers, rain, sunshine and warmth; everything about this season is wonderful. It is a physical reminder of the seasons in our lives that come and go; winter seemed like it was going to last forever especially when you have a toddler who catches a cold every now and again. But guess what? it didn’t last forever and spring is here and it will also not last forever. It has to make way for summer. The trick is not to get too attached to the season as it is just passing by, we must learn from it and prepare ourselves for the next season in our lives. One of my old time favourite artists is Lauryn Hill and one of her songs come to mind:

“Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
After winter, must come spring
Change, it comes eventually”

On the 21st of September 2017 , we celebrated our fourth year anniversary and in the same month we welcomed the latest addition to our family: our baby girl Thandolwethu Cele. In the first year of our marriage, I didn’t think in four years we would be parents to two human beings (yes maybe a pet or two but not two people). This has been an adventure from the moment I met Sweet-One. We were the most unlikely couple to get married because of our different religious backgrounds; only God knew he would be the father of my babies and the King to my heart (lord Charles).

In our first year of marriage we received lots of advice; we also had some people tell us to enjoy the honeymoon while it lasted as if it was downhill from then on. But the one advice I didn’t understand then which I have grown to understand now was by Phumzile Letsosa (yes Phumi I do listen when you speak). She said “Grow with your marriage”. At the time I was thinking uPhumi wants us to be boring in the next few years or something.

Four years later this is what I think she meant, like with everything in life marriage goes through different seasons and each season has a purpose. When it was just the two of us I understood love to be butterflies in my stomach, buying me ice cream at whatever crazy hour I asked, taking out my braids, going out every other night and the excitement of planning the next getaway. Matured love on the other hand is; pregnancy back rubs, taking turns staying up when the baby is sick, paying the mortgage, changing nappies kinda love. It doesn’t mean you don’t buy ice cream or plan getaways anymore. It means your love has evolved into something more meaningful. You don’t just spend money and time anymore; you invest it in your family. In fact , romantic getaways and dressing up to go out just the two of you is an investment you need to make so you can continue being great lovers and good parents. When we first got married I didn’t understand the concept of date night; I mean we go out for breakfast, and the next day it’s dinner, why do you need to plan it? Now I can safely say couples must make date night a priority.

If you do not make time to bond with one another you can lose your wife to motherhood and your husband to fatherhood. Share on X

When you express your love for each other you produce human beings as a product of your love and affection, and that is a beautiful gift. Children are a gift from God and a blessing, but they are also romance killers. If you do not make time to bond with one another you can lose your wife to motherhood and your husband to fatherhood. Being parents brings another dimension to your marriage, it tests your tolerance and patience but it also brings a joy and love for your family that you can never get from anything else.

I am not the woman I was when we met and I am not the woman I was when we got married, and he is not who he was either. We are more patient, wiser, more considerate and we are a few kilograms heavier than we were 😆 . I am a much bolder person than I was, thanks to my brave Sweet-One. He has encouraged me to do things I never thought I would ever do. Becoming parents made us to realise human beings can function on four hours of sleep  😉 but it  has also made us realise how much love we have to give.

As we celebrate our 4 years of marriage I look forward to the next level of growth and learning together; I will write about having a family of four soon. I am sure it is going to be an adventure. The reason this remains the best advice is because she didn’t tell me how I should be a perfect wife or how things will be hard as soon the honeymoon was over. What she did was prepare me for the different seasons while keeping a positive outlook. Growth is defined as an act or process of gradual increase. Growth means increase in value. Whatever season your marriage is in, one thing is for sure it can only grow from it. Be sure to grow with it.

I am Prudence Lerato “Rirhandzu” Cele. Ms. Dzo is a nick name my darling Lebo Nthathe gave me instead of calling me Randzo which is what most people call me.

I am a believer in love (God), I love serving others through prayer, song and ministering his word it just brings meaning to my life. I believe that prayer changes everything and I will be writing on that too. I’m a wife to lord Charles ‘’Bash’’ Cele. I call him Sweet-One because he just makes life sweeter. I am a mother of two. I play many other roles in my life but the ones above will be the focus of this blog as I believe those are the most important roles.

So, I blog because I believe I have something to say, I blog because I simply want to express what is in my heart. Lastly, I blog because (Ke rata dilo) ‘I simply like things.’

Would you like to create content but you lack foll Would you like to create content but you lack followers?

There is another option.

User generated content is where you produce content for brands, and it really doesn't matter how many followers you have.

Lakeisha Mugo from Kenya has put together a UGC guide that will give you the plan that you need.

What I liked about this guide:
📱No fluff, real steps.
📱Great ideas for engagement and what really makes a thoughtful comment.
📱Loads of templates for everything including letters to brands and even for feedback on your work.
📱Africa specific and relevant.
📱How to make sure that you charge according to the different levels of UGC

It's all up on the blog! So go ahead and read it.

It's that season where we are going around looking It's that season where we are going around looking at high schools.

I know. Time flies. How did we get here?

I loved the quotes on the walls and the art work of the students. If I had to do school again, I think I'd do more art and cooking.

What would you do?

Anyway, let's hope Nicky gets accepted somewhere for next year. These applications are a lot of work. But I've done 3 of them now.

Nicky really likes this school. And of course he went straight for the chess.

Ask Chat GPT to make a caricature of you based on what it knows about you. You'll get a better result if you tell it what you do. The first attempt was slide 2, it thinks I am a doctor. And I never ask it medical questions.

Try it out and see what you get.

But I needed to do something different. I needed to turn it around for the light. But the alarm antenna stuck out in the corner.

I was busy doing a blog post on bringing nature into your home and I got inspired to put a green feature there and bring in two flower pots. I also got some baskets to clear the clutter.

You have the power to rewrite your story and create something beautiful.

You just need that push to start.

Update on Survivor PE: We have intermittent water Update on Survivor PE: We have intermittent water but no power. Lastest news is we might have it by Thursday but I'm not holding my breath.
I wanted to do laundry today and brought the maid to my mom's house and everything but because it's a cloudy day the solar is only on two dots so we've got to conserve power.

When the city tells you that you're not going to h When the city tells you that you're not going to have power for two weeks!

A huge pylon collapsed due to vandalism, wind and rust.

And then your water goes...

You freak out and then you make a plan.
For the first morning, I hot spotted.

Then in the afternoon I went to my mom to teach the rest of my classes.

Since then I have basically moved all my food over to her house and started cooking there as well. I'm also going there to charge everything.

There's no point even using the gas when all the food needs to be kept cold so it needs to be done in one place.

For the water, I now have a system. We flush the toilet with pool water. Wash ourselves and dishes with tank water. And drink from the little tank.

Nicky has also adapted and is enjoying Granny's chairs.

Oh, and I've also been restyling furniture in my study. If the light is in front of me, it is better. I've been dealing with work assessments.

But we can't wait for the lights to come back on and running water.

Until then, I'm super grateful for family.

"Humbled" I asked Nicky how he felt after a week "Humbled"

I asked Nicky how he felt after a week of Mzanzi, the interprovincial chess tournament. Nicky played Board 1 for Eastern Cape A team. That meant that he faced the top players in his age category from all over the country.

He won 3 and lost 3 for the team section.

Tuesday was especially brutal. Three rounds in one day (9am, 2pm and 7pm).

He was also not well. Sore throat and coughing. We went to the doctor on Wednesday, missed the team photos and continued on with the individual competition.

The individual one can take up to four hours. Nicky was doing about an average of three.

He won 2 and drew 4. From a starting rank of 6 he ended up 17.

"They don't make any mistakes" he said.

Last night we watched Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise getting himself out of the submarine. I told Nicky that whatever difficult position he finds himself in, he can do it.

He drew the last one.

I'm super proud of him and what he has endured this week. It hasn't been easy. He has tried his best. And, like all the other chess parents, I've sat there and waited.

For me it's not about where he came. It's the joy of the game. While the team prize giving went on, we played in the arcade. After the individual game was done we played in the escape room. (We totally weren't able to escape but it was an experience)

Wherever this chess journey takes him, I will follow and support. And always help him find the joy. ♟️

Nicky was big enough to go on the break dancer this year and I watched him go twice! He also loved that pendulum swing one.
For me, I still love the big wheel the best.

On thing I am thrilled about: they had candy floss this year! Getting Nicky some of that was so cool because we used to do that as a child.
