Treating hair loss involves both surgical and non-surgical methods. If you don’t want to spend several days recovering from hair transplant surgery, then some of the non-surgical methods may work for you. It could be time to investigate platelet rich plasma therapy.
Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy
One of the newest hair loss treatments is called Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy, or PRP for short. PRP is sometimes called the vampire treatment because it involves the use of your blood. It’s considered an “off-label” treatment for conditions like alopecia areata (also known as spot baldness) as well as androgenetic alopecia (patterned hair loss in both men and women.)
How Does PRP Work?
There are three steps to a successful PRP treatment. The first involves retrieving plasma from the body. A very small amount of blood is drawn from your arm – less than what the Red Cross takes when you donate blood. This blood is then spun in a centrifuge to separate out the plasma. In the next step, the platelets are concentrated and activated. Since the activated platelets contain growth factors and some healing properties, they will hopefully encourage your hair to grow. They also cause new blood vessels to develop and can keep your existing follicles from losing their hair. Finally, the last step of the process involves injecting the activated platelets into the areas of your scalp that lack hair.
What Are Some Advantages Of This Treatment?
The advantages of PRP are numerous. Since the process is only minimally invasive, there isn’t any downtime. You won’t have to deal with all of the potential complications that come with hair transplants. However, PRP can be combined with a hair transplant, as it will stimulate the transplanted follicles. You also won’t need any medications, and since the platelets come from your blood, you won’t have to worry about your immune system attacking them.

Is PRP Effective?
We have had many positive results at SureHair, so we feel confident recommending this treatment. Some studies have shown that patients who underwent PRP grew more hair than those who used other non-surgical methods. Overall, 60% of patients with alopecia areata that underwent PRP wound up in complete remission. Their hair stopped falling out and even grew back. Since it’s very effective when compared to the control groups, this treatment should be the first stop for anyone suffering from hair loss.
Will PRP Work For Me?
PRP is a method used for much more than hair loss. Yes, it will help anyone with pattern baldness. However, it is also used in sports medicine and dentistry. This useful treatment can help regrow bones, skin, gum disease, and much more. It’s even been used in cosmetic surgery, helping patients recover faster. With so many uses and such proven results, it’s no wonder that PRP is one of the leading hair loss treatments.
Since PRP obtains great results when combined with other hair loss treatments, it is something that everyone with hair loss should consider. Since it doesn’t require a large amount of recovery time, it should be the first option on the list.
