Christmas should be the merriest holiday of all. Around that time, the streets are full of people, you can hear Christmas music everywhere, and decorations are around every corner. However, preparations for the festive season can, for some people, be a source of stress.
If you are one of those people who get stressed around the holidays, don’t worry — there are trusted ways that can help you survive this ‘sugary and spicy’ time of the year.
Here are ten strategies that can help you feel good during Christmas.
Make a Plan
The first rule is probably the most important one: make a plan and stick to it. If you are organising Christmas dinner at your house, make a guest list, think about the best ways to handle everything, and then divide the work so that you can do a bit every day.
Stick to Your Routine
Our daily routine is what our life is made of. However, somewhere around Christmas, people get stressed about every single detail because they are afraid they won’t manage to prepare everything in time. Only thinking about it causes stress, so we try to change our plans to get everything done, thus creating an even bigger mess.
This year, try to think about Christmas as a great holiday that gathers the family and don’t make a fuss about it. Don’t cancel plans with friends or skip the gym just because you think you should use that time to buy presents or find recipes for a perfect Christmas meal.
There is enough time for everything and you don’t need to completely change your routine because of one holiday.
Money, Money, Money
During the holidays, we tend to overspend as everything is so adorable, colourful, and on sale. Also, another excuse is that it’s Christmas and you need to give yourself a break from all the calculating and simply go with the flow.
Although you should treat yourself to something precious as a sign of self love, it would be better to set a budget first. You need to know the prices of everything you need. Therefore, you can plan accordingly.
Gifts
It looks like it is essential that our gifts to others are out-of-this-world, which might be hard after so many years of buying presents, as our imagination simply gets a little rusty.
Before you go shopping, let’s make one thing clear — there’s no such thing as a perfect gift. If you buy it from the heart, it will be valued for sure. Therefore, don’t stress about it too much — simply take a walk and take a look at stuff. When you see something that reminds you of a specific person, you’ll know it’s a great match.
Start on Time
If you already know that you need a lot of time to get everything in order, start in advance. You need a month to buy all the presents? Start buying them one month before Christmas. This will help you lead a normal life, without feeling you won’t finish it all in time.
Surround Yourself With Loved Ones
It is always better to be alone than in bad company. If you have to work with people you don’t like or a friend of your friend is continuously crashing your dates and annoying you, choose the people around you wisely during the Christmas season.
Spend it with family members you adore or friends who spark joy in you even after so many years of hanging out, and avoid everyone who doesn’t bring happiness into your life.
Eat and Breathe
Overeating is a usual thing during the holidays. We are used to doing it because there’s a lot of food we love in front of us. This year, decide that you will eat slowly. Breathe. Don’t just swallow food — chew it properly. Your body will be grateful for it!
Christmas time can be very stressful – in fact, family and relationships are commonly cited causes of stress. But to live happily without stress means getting through the holidays mindfully – so take a deep breath when you feel the need and try to stay in the moment.
Exercise
Excuses are never acceptable, not even when it’s Christmas. If you are busy during the day, get up half an hour earlier and do simple exercises at home or do some bedtime yoga when you finish doing everything else. Exercising can do wonders when it comes to stress relief, so try not to skip it.
Self-Care
In situations when stress is inevitable, it is important that we know how to de-stress properly. Devote some time to yourself and think of a nice pampering routine. You need to understand that your fuel is energy, and if you want to be able to function properly, you need to refill yourself from time to time.
Be Grateful
Gratitude is believed to have an enormous impact on our nervous system and overall well-being. Every morning, before you take a look at your endless to-do list, think about all the beautiful people and things that are a part of your life right now.
Be grateful — that will set the tone for the rest of your day. And remember, holidays are there to promote love, so if you have some love to give, everything else should be a piece of cake.
