By now you’re probably a bit weary of yet another post giving you something to do with your kids under lockdown. Yet the reality is we need all the help we can get as parents. If there is any help we will take it! Today we review the “Wacky Box” which is a subscription box for kids which contains fun activities for a month.
The box comes with a little instruction booket. This booklet divides the activities into four weeks. Each week they give you four items:
- language/ speech
- sensory
- fine motor
- gross motor
We didn’t do all the activities. Nicky and I decided to choose the ones that interested us. The theme of this booklet was shapes but we landed up not really doing jump up to the shapes, jump on the shapes or cutting out the shapes. I did like all the cute poems about shapes though.
What we really liked were the sensory activities. And the gross motor. So without further ado, let’s look at the ones we tested:
Hit the beach ball (gross motor)
This was the first item that Nicky was drawn to. He absolutely loved this beach ball. He played with it all over the garden. Then it started raining and he played with it inside. One broken frame and glass later, I knew I had to make a plan to put it somewhere where he could still have fun hitting it without any damage happening. The staircase was perfect. So we hang it up (aka Wacky box instructions) so he could hit it there. We already had a table tennis bat which we used but the Wacky box actually had a do it yourself bat you could make out of their box.
Cut the play dough (fine motor)
The box comes with a lovely pair of scissors which actually have indentations for the little fingers. So it really is a nice comfortable fit for cutting. If you’re only just starting to cut, play dough is a great place to start. I really liked the Wacky Box’s play dough. It smells divine! It’s lovely.
Some of the other fine motor activities in this box which are awesome if you are working on cutting skills are: cutting foam, cutting zig-zags and cutting shapes.
Sago Balls (sensory)
This is a lovely sensory activity. I forgot to take pics but I have put it in the fridge for future use and took a pic now. Sago is starch that comes from a tropical palm, similar to Topioca. Add water to these balls and they turn pink. Loads of fun for messy play.
Sensory sorting bag (sensory)
I really liked this. We kept it on our table for a while (until it burst about a day later…) You make gelatin and put it in the fridge for 3 hours. (I forgot, left it overnight, but it still worked). Draw circles on the bag depending on how many colours you have. You then put the gelatin in a zip lock bag and also the beads. Tape it all down. You then push the beads into different circles, depending on their colours. Nicky being Nicky, had to invent some games to do with this. We did one competition (always has to be a competition hey…) where we had to get one colour each in our respective circles.
Jumping on bubble wrap shapes (gross motor)
I just put them on the floor. You were meant to tape them down. But Nicky made his own hopscotch.
Cork painting (sensory)
They use finger paint for this which is really nice. A powder that you add water to. And it turns blue. You then get to print your cork on existing circles in various shapes.
All in all we had a lot of fun with the Wacky Box, and it was educational too. I can totally recommend it to keep the kids busy.
