When Melanie Templer arrived in Bali she had a stubborn skin issue. While doing research among natural local plants and remedies, she stumbled upon a passion which led to the creation of Utama Spice. Today the company is run by her daughter Ria, who contacted me to review the Somona Yi Diffuser. This diffuser will fill the air with natural scents and doubles as a lamp as well.
About Utama Spice
If you look at Utama Spice’s website, you’ll see they stock a variety of products in the different categories of bath, body care, diffusers and essential oils. If you download their free ebook you’ll also see they give you recipes for beauty (face mask, face scrub and body scrub), household recipes (floor cleaning liquid and room spray) as well as the physical and emotional benefits of certain essential oils.
They also have a blog section where I stumbled across this useful post about the five best essential oils for improving mental health (lavender, mint, bergamot, orange and patchouli) . So not only can you use this diffuser for filling the air with lovely smells, unblocking your kid’s nose and giving him a night light, you could potentially also use it for yourself for uplifting your mood too.
Utama Spice is all natural and handmade in Bali from ethically and sustainably sourced ingrediants.
Essential Oils
The Somona diffuser also came with an assortment of oils which we have been trying out (tea tree, clove, orange, fennel and rosemary).
Clove, according to their ebook, is an immune booster, and helps with arthritis, asthma and muscle spasms. For emotions is helps with memory, concentration, fatigue and depression.
Rosemary assists with sore muscles, arthritis, dandruff, muscle cramps and poor circulation. Emotionally it helps with burnout, confidence, grief, irritability and stress.
Orange helps with stress, fear and depression and can bring peace and confidence.
Tea tree oil is a powerful antiseptic for acne and cold sores, skin ailments, burns and controlling germs.
Fennel is really good for digestive (gut) issues and also contains antioxidants.
Well, that’s enough background about the company and some of their many oils; let’s get to the Somona Yi Diffuser.
The Somona Yi Diffuser
This is a luxury ultrasonic diffuser, air humidifier and LED lamp. A perfect companion for your home, office, kid’s room, spa or salon.
This diffuser has several advantages to it. It gives you a good dose of aromatherapy, it’s very quiet, it has a cosy light, an automatic shut off as well as a timer function.
To make it work you have to take off the crematic cover and inner lid. You pour water to the max water line and then add a few drops of your essential oil. When you empty it make sure it isn’t from the air vent side. It comes with a chord you must plug in. Get an adaptor comvertor as it is a US plug.
The gadget comes with two buttons. The one on the left operates the diffuser and the one on the right works the light.
So on the right for the diffusing mist, if you push the button once (all three lights on) you’ll get a continuous mist, Twice (one light) and you’ll get one hour. Thee times (middle light) and you’ll get three hours, four times (top light) and you’ll get eight hours. To turn off press the button five times so that all the lights are off.
The lamp on top works on four settings: strong (press button once), weak (twice), breathing (x3) and off (x4).
The device emits a lovely spray of water and the relevant aromatic smell.
Nicky and I made a little video about the device and you’ll see a bit more about how it works. We enjoyed the smell and the soft light of the lamp.
