Today we meet successful momentrepreneur Tzvia from The Laser Beautique.
- Tell us about yourself, a bit of background.
I am firstly a wife. My amazing and supportive husband backed me in business and today we both focus on growing the Beautique Group. I am a mom to two incredible kids, Shyla (6) and Dayne (5). I am also mom to our two gorgeous staffies, Nonu and Layla. My husband and I started The Laser Beautique in 2009, before we got married and had kids. Today we run The Laser Beautique franchise, Beautique Brands which is a distribution business we started, Beautique Academy which is our very own Beauty and Aesthetic school and we are in the process of launching our own skincare brand called Beaucueticals.
2. What were you doing before you started this business?
I worked for Afrika Tikkun which is a NGO which raises funds and supports kids that have been infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. I was a corporate fundraiser. I spent my days raising fund to build and maintain early childhood development centres in the township.
3. Is your business full time or part time and why?
Our business runs full time. 7 days a week, from 8am-8pm. Our clinics are in shopping centres which means we have to open 7 days a week. We also open early and late so that we can accommodate working woman, like me 😊. I work full time, Monday to Friday but I am flexible. I take and fetch kids from school and extra murals.
4. How do you juggle the responsibilities of being a mom with your work?
Although I work full time, my kids come first from pick up time which is 12:40. Whilst they are at school I focus on businesses and in the afternoons, I focus on my kids. I do work and answer mails and calls whilst they are in their extra murals. My laptop goes with me wherever I go. Multitasking does get tricky at times. It’s all a balancing act. I spend a lot of time working on our weekly calendar. Neil, my husband helps fetch and take kids on certain days. Granny and Nana also assist, especially on days when kids have extramural at the same time but different areas.
5. How do you get clients/ market yourself?
We chose services and products that are “no brainers”. Everyone wants pain-free, permanent laser hair removal that we offer at The Laser Beautique. Everyone wants to look younger and age slower, our technology facials reverse the hands of time and slows down the aging process. We distribute a device called Apilus. It’s the only device in the world that is FDA approved for 100% hair removal which is exceptionally comfortable. We also distribute a brand called SNOB Milano which is an optical and sunglass brand. This brand is genius. It’s the only brand in the world that have come up with a two in one optical and sunglass clip on which is stylish and trendy. Our brands and services basically sell themselves. We do great marketing campaigns that help make people aware of what we do and sell.
6. What’s your biggest challenge right now?
Time management. There is so much to do and so many more products I would love to bring into South Africa. Feels like there is just not enough hours in the day or days in the week.
7. Did you need a lot of money to start off? And how long was it before you made a profit?
We started off in a little spare room in my mom’s house. I am very familiar with the term bootstrapping. With every new treatment or product we launch, we bootstrap it till that particular product or service has created some sort of income to reinvest. If it doesn’t generate enough, then we scrap it. Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. It’s all trial and error. To start a business, you got to be street wise, savvy and save till you can afford to splash out on marketing initiatives.
8. What makes your business unique from other brands?
We have many “firsts” that we are proud of. We were the first in Africa with pain-free permanent laser hair removal. When I see that our price list is copied in pasted on someone else’s website, its stings but at the same time it reminds me that we are the leaders. We are setting the prices in our industry. We are the first in Africa with 100% permanent hair removal. We are award winning which makes me very proud. We have won Les Nouvellle Esthetique’s Aesthetic Clinic of the Year. We have won Proffessional Beauty Aesthetic Clinic of the Year and EOHCB’s Most Innovative Business of the Year Award. We are not only developing our own skincare range we are also in the process of developing our very own laser technology.
