Meet Giselle, who sews some awesome mobiles and other children’s goods. She also does some sensory items for a psychologist too.
- Tell us about yourself, a bit of background.
I’m a bohemian heart with a corporate brain and background. My mom has always sewed so I love fabric and colour and playing.
I worked in IT up until the birth of my son. I took voluntary retrenchment but then was invited to apply for a post at one of the big computer vendors. I worked out the business plan and an hour after submitting I withdrew myself as it just did not make sense looking at my son’s face. Now I sew!
Full part time – my son only started school last year and my daughter is still at home with me, I work when they allow me to.
- How do you juggle the responsibilities of being a mom with your work?
Kids come first – my kids especially my daughter “work” with me, so my space is chaotic. To me it’s not so much about juggling; just not sweating the small stuff.
- Do you have a business plan? If so, can you share a bit about your strategy to make it successful?
No not really, business is just growing organically. Soon as I think I’ll be a bit lazy someone sends a request. I think I’ve written too many business plans so I’m just enjoying myself and making sure I cover my kids’ extra activities.
- How do you get clients/ market yourself?
Word of mouth mainly. I use Facebook as a catalogue so when people ask me for pictures I refer them to my main page. https://facebook.com/roamingroad/.
I just started doing one or two markets with fellow friends and because I really enjoy making mobiles I’ve created a special page dedicated to them, I’ll launch it with a Facebook competition.
Time!! How to price? Apparently I’m too cheap but I’m learning; it’s difficult to price when your own hands created it. Too many things I want to make: so little time.
- Did you need a lot of money to start off? And how long was it before you made a profit?
I’m not expensive so my profits are not huge, enjoyment is my main motivator. I make on demand and now and then I make for fun and these I take to market.
I won’t mass produce, no two items are ever the same…focus is on unique. I put a lot of time and effort into each item.
- Share with us your social media links and website.

Stunning! Wish I’d known about these when my son was still a baby. Are you considering setting up your own website, Giselle? (I’m not on facebook).
