Today we meet retired blogger Burgie Ireland, who blogs at 4mom4ever
1) What do you normally get up to on an average day? (Give us a brief description about yourself)
I’m up before 5 to read and write. As a once-nurse and midwife, I write for baby magazines. I belong to Writers 2000 – a group of new and experienced writers – and am this year’s chairman. Currently working of my first novel. Have had pregnancy booklets published, as well as a children’s storybook ‘Daisy and the Flower seller’ – also translated into Afrikaans.
At around midday I practice the piano for about 2 hours.
I do chores, shopping and outings in the afternoon.
As you can gather, I don’t have the responsibility of children any more. We had 4 and they are all grown up now and have left the nest.
In a nutshell – I have reached that wonderful stage when time is my own, and I can start fulfilling my dreams.
2) How do you feel about motherhood – what are your struggles and joys?
I love being a mother – and now, even better – a grandmother. It was a struggle bringing up 4 (the eldest was 6 when the last baby was born), especially when they were teenagers, and my daughter got pregnant when she was only 14. Now I have a wonderful granddaughter (one of 6) who is already 23 and she is as close to me as my laatlammertjie!
3) Tell us about your kid(s)
My eldest son turns 40 this year, and the youngest is 33. My children with children live close to us so I see them quite often. My youngest is living in London with his girlfriend, and my unmarried daughter lives in Cape Town and is a career girl. My granddaughter is currently working in Holland. The grandchildren range from 2, 5, 8, 9, 11 and 23.
4). How did you start blogging?
When I was forced to retire from my nursing career due to illness (Lupus) my daughter suggested I start blogging. That was 4 years ago, and I have I think about 10,000 visitors – it’s interesting to see where they all come from. Luckily my daughter set my blog up for me, and then she taught me how to send my own posts.
5) Share with us a valuable blogging tip you’ve learnt. (or more)
Without a doubt, blogging has improved my writing skills. It’s also a discipline.
6) If you make money from your blog, give us a breakdown on how you do it. Give us some of your methods on how to get started on this, or any tips or advice.
No, I have not made any money on my blog yet. I am hoping to in the near future though.
