Today we meet South African content creator, Vino Moodley, who you can follow at @justamom_vino.
- What do you normally get up to on an average day? (Give us a brief description about yourself)
My day is structured chaos. I’m up at 4:30 getting myself ready, then the kids & lunches. I make time to upload a reel or post for the day, and engage with content before school drop off. I am a teacher so it’s a day and half there. After school I fetch the kids from my mom, help with homework, and get at least 3 suppers done. I prep for the next day, do my school work after the kids are put to bed, plan content for a few days, engage with other creators, sleep, repeat.
2. How do you feel about motherhood – what are your struggles and joys?
I love being a mom more than I enjoyed being pregnant. Having had gestational diabetes in both pregnancies, I carried very heavy and was very uncomfortable.
My joys in motherhood are being a present and hands on mom. I love cuddles, hugs and kisses so I maximise on that. The kids know that they can charge up with me, so I soak it all in.
My struggle is finding a balance between the individual needs of both my kids. My son has reached the preteen – rebellious phase and my daughter is on the spectrum. I have to be her voice through many situations in and out of the home. Plus, I have to at the same time show my son the same amount of attention and time so he doesn’t feel left out or feel like I’m not fighting for him too. Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing without feeling like I’m hurting one of my children in some way.
3) Tell us about your kid(s)
My son is 9, a preteen with lots of attitude. He is also a clown, very funny. He is a huge fan of soccer and Jurassic World. He is a very sensitive and strong willed boy. I do my best to stand my ground as a mom and at the same time not to crush his spirit.
My daughter can be difficult to handle sometimes, but I know how to be her calm. She is so full of love and affection. She is also very sensitive and considerate to others. She’s also my tail.
4) How did you start with content creating?
I have always been fascinated with social media, creating content and working with brands but did not have the knowledge about how to get started.
It all started with a random email from Reading Eggs and then I was introduced to a group of amazing women who selflessly helped me and taught me things I needed to equip myself with to create engaging content.
5) What makes you different from the other content creators out there?
My honesty and my take to reality. Whether its a good or bad time in my life or moment I encountered, I always turn it into laughs because I know someone out there can relate. I also have a dark sense of humour which has been part of my healing through my childhood and life.
6) Share with us a valuable content creating tip you’ve learnt. (or more)
I’ve learnt through trial and error and from communicating to other creators, also lots videos and research, Quality over Quantity. A good, clean aesthetic is also a great touch to content creating. I post once a day so that the algorithm can do its thing and push my content out.
7) If you make money from this, give us a breakdown on how you do it. Give us some of your methods on how to get started on this, or any tips or advice.
I’ve only earned on The Salt. I have yet to receive paid collaborations. I am learning from others on how to snag those.
Some of Vino’s best posts:
Having to wake up early and its super cold.
Be the change breaking generational cycles.
“This is something I strongly believe in and live by since becoming a mum” says Vino.
Some of my faves though:
The one where the kid says he left his homework at home (“I know you’re lyin’, cos your lips are movin’. Tell me do you think I’m dumb?)
I also love it when she uses film extracts like The Hangover: Teachers on a Friday and Every Teacher right now because its the last weekend before the new term.
A quick tutorial from Vino on how she does the memes:
