Your Ultimate Couch Buying Guide for South Africa

February 7, 2025 by Heather Step 1 Comment

I remember when Brett and I went to buy our first new couches together. It was soon after moving into our new house. I also remember that we’d just had a major argument, and sitting, fuming, in that furniture store. But that was how he was: he went on with what needed to be done, even if we’d had a row. He was the good sort of committed guy that I probably took for granted at that time.

The lounge suite was brown and stripy, a good idea to cover messes and kid’s spilling habits. It’s still serving us very well to this day. Nicky spends a lot of time on it!

A couch isn’t just another piece of furniture—it’s the centerpiece of your living space. In South Africa, where family gatherings and cozy evenings are a big part of life, choosing the right couch is more important than ever. You need something that blends comfort, durability, and style while fitting your home and lifestyle perfectly, as well as allow for messy kids. This guide will help you find a couch that checks all the boxes, making your decision easier and your investment worthwhile.

Section 1: Types of Couches Available in South Africa

Common Couch Styles

  1. Sectional Sofas

Sectional sofas are perfect if you’re looking to maximize seating without sacrificing style. These large, L-shaped or U-shaped couches are designed to fit snugly into corners, making them great for open-plan living areas or spaces with awkward layouts. They typically come in multiple pieces, so you can customize the arrangement to suit your room.

Why choose a sectional?

  • Spacious: Ideal for large families or those who love to entertain. Everyone gets a seat!
  • Adaptable: Some sectionals have movable pieces, offering more flexibility to rearrange your space.
  • Stylish and functional: Many designs feature modern aesthetics and even built-in storage or recliners.

If your living space is the hub of family activity, this couch type is a smart investment.

2. Loveseats

Compact and cozy, loveseats are made for two people, making them an excellent option for smaller spaces. They fit seamlessly into apartments, small living rooms, or even bedrooms where extra seating is needed. While they don’t take up much room, they still pack a punch in terms of design and comfort.

How do they fit in?

  • Space-saving: Perfect for snug areas where a full-sized sofa won’t work.
  • Easy pairing: Loveseats are versatile and often paired with larger couches or armchairs to complete a seating arrangement.
  • Stylish addition: Available in various colors, fabrics, and designs to match any style preference.

Adding a loveseat is like putting the final puzzle piece into your living room setup—intimate, functional, and stylish.

3. Sofa Beds

Sofa beds, also known as sleeper sofas, provide ultimate versatility by transforming from a comfortable couch to a convenient sleeping surface. Whether you’re hosting overnight guests or maximizing space in your home, this dual-purpose furniture is the MVP of multitasking.

Why are sofa beds a win?

  • Multi-functional: Serve as a seating area during the day and a bed at night.
  • Space-saving: Excellent for studio apartments, guest rooms, or any multifunctional space.
  • Modern convenience: Many sofa beds are now designed to look as beautiful as their non-convertible counterparts.

With a sofa bed, you give your guests a warm and welcoming place to stay without needing extra room for a traditional bed.

4. Recliners

OLI FABRIC ARMCHAIR RECLINER - DARK GREY

Recliners are all about one thing: comfort. Perfect for relaxing after a long day, modern recliners are no longer bulky eyesores but sleek and functional pieces of furniture. Many come with added perks like built-in cup holders or USB charging ports, making them a tech-ready choice for today’s lifestyle.

What to look for in recliners?

  • Adjustability: Recliners now feature smooth, adjustable mechanisms for maximum comfort.
  • Extra features: From swivel bases to massaging and heating options, there’s something for every need.
  • Luxurious feel: Often crafted to balance style and coziness, these are perfect for creating your ideal lounging nook.

Think of a recliner as your throne for binge-watching, reading, or just kicking back in luxury.

Materials and Upholstery Options

The material you choose for your couch says a lot about its durability, maintenance, and overall look. In South Africa, you’ll find a wide variety of upholstery options, each with its pros and cons:

  • Fabric: A fabric-covered couch is soft, inviting, and available in countless colors and patterns. It’s generally more affordable and easy to clean depending on the fabric type, such as microfiber. However, it might not be ideal for homes with pets or small children prone to spills.
  • Leather: Leather couches are a classic choice, exuding elegance and sophistication. They’re durable and relatively easy to clean but can be pricey. Faux leather can offer a budget-friendly alternative with a similar look.
  • Synthetic Materials: Options like polyester blends or performance fabrics are great for busy households. They resist stains and wear well over time. Plus, they’re available in a wide range of modern designs and textures.

Choosing the right material can be like picking your wardrobe—balance practicality with style to suit your everyday needs and aesthetic.

Section 2: Key Factors to Consider When Buying a Couch

Choosing the right couch is more than just picking something that looks good in your living room. A couch is a long-term investment, one that ties together comfort, style, and practicality. To help you make the best decision, here are the key factors to keep in mind when shopping for a new couch.

Size and Space Planning

A couch that fits your space perfectly can make or break the room’s layout. Start by measuring your space with a tape measure, paying attention to dimensions like width, length, and height. Think about how much clearance you’ll need for doors, windows, and walkways.

Here’s a quick checklist for space planning:

  • Room Size: For small rooms, opt for a compact loveseat or a slim sectional. For larger spaces, don’t shy away from full-sized sofas or L-shaped sectionals.
  • Proportions: Keep the couch proportional to other furniture in the room. A bulky sofa might overwhelm a small coffee table.
  • Flow and Functionality: Ensure there’s enough space for people to move around comfortably—leave about 80-100 cm between the couch and other furniture.

Sketch out a rough floor plan or use room-planning apps to visualize where the couch will sit. This step saves time and prevents regret later on.

Comfort and Support

Your couch should feel like sitting on a cloud—comfort is non-negotiable! But what does comfort really mean? It comes down to cushion fillings, back support, and seat depth.

  • Cushion Fillings: Foam cushions provide firmness, while feather fillings offer a plush, sink-in sensation. Many couches use a blend of both for balanced comfort.
  • Seat Depth: For taller folks or those who like to sprawl, a deeper seat (around 55-60 cm) works well. Shallower seats (50 cm or less) are better for upright sitting.
  • Back Support: High-back couches support your neck and shoulders, while low-back designs suit spaces with a modern aesthetic but might lack full upper spine support.

When testing a couch, take five minutes to sit, lounge, and slouch on it. If you feel cradled but supported, you’ve found a winner.

Build Quality

A couch is an investment, so make sure it lasts. The build quality is where durability comes into play. Look for these signs of a well-made couch:

  • Frame: Hardwood frames, like oak or birch, are the gold standard for durability. Avoid particleboard or softwood frames for heavy daily use.
  • Joints: Joints that use dowels, screws, and nails are sturdier than those held together only by glue or staples.
  • Spring Systems: Coil or sinuous spring systems provide even support and keep your couch from sagging over time. Check that none of the springs squeak under pressure.

It’s like buying a car—you wouldn’t choose one without inspecting how it’s made. The same thinking applies here.

Style and Aesthetic

Your couch should complement your décor while being a statement piece. Whether your home leans toward minimalist, industrial, or vintage, find a couch style that aligns with it.

Matching to Décor Styles:

  • For a Scandinavian vibe, go with clean lines, light-colored fabrics, and wooden legs.
  • In more traditional homes, choose tufted designs or rolled arms for a classic touch.
  • Leather and metallic details thrive in modern or industrial spaces.

2025 Color Trends in South Africa:

  • Earth Tones: Browns, terracottas, and sage greens create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
  • Soft Neutrals: Cream and nude tones bring a sense of calm sophistication.
  • Pops of Bold Color: Vibrant jewel tones like emerald or mustard yellow make for an eye-catching centerpiece.

Think of your couch as a canvas—choose a design and color that ties your whole room together seamlessly.

Budget and Value for Money

Your budget is one of the most significant factors when buying a couch. High price doesn’t always mean high quality, so focus on getting the best value for your money.

Breaking Down Price Ranges:

  • Affordable (R5,000 – R10,000): Great for first-time buyers or temporary setups. Look for functional but durable materials like polyester blends or basic wood frames.
  • Mid-Range (R10,000 – R25,000): Offers a balance of quality and style, with options for customizable fabrics or upgraded spring systems.
  • Premium (R25,000 and up): High-end designs with luxury materials like real leather and artisan craftsmanship. Ideal for those who want a statement piece that lasts.

Financing Options: Many retailers offer payment plans, so you can afford a better-quality couch without blowing your budget upfront.

When to Splurge:

  • If it’s a focal point for your living room that you’ll use daily, it’s worth spending more.
  • For rarely-used spaces like guest rooms, choose budget-friendly styles.

Finally, always check for warranties and return policies. These offer peace of mind in case something doesn’t meet your expectations.

Section 3: Where to Buy Couches in South Africa

Top Local Retailers

  • @home: As one of the biggest names in homeware, @home offers diverse couch styles ranging from modern to classic. You can visit their showrooms across major cities or explore their online catalog before heading in-store.
  • Coricraft: Renowned for their customizable options and high-quality craftsmanship, Coricraft has outlets in most urban hubs. They’re an excellent choice if you’re looking for genuine leather or plush fabric sofas.
  • Decofurn: A budget-friendly alternative for those seeking stylish yet affordable couches. They have a solid presence in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban, making them accessible for most shoppers.
  • Weylandts: Known as a premium homeware retailer, Weylandts provides sophisticated designs that lean toward luxury. If you want your couch to make a high-end statement, this is the place to go.

When shopping in-store, don’t hesitate to ask questions about frame materials, warranties, and customization options. Test the couch by sitting on it in every position you’ll likely use—you spend hours here, so comfort is key!

Online Shopping Options

If you prefer convenience, online platforms offer a wide selection of couches that can be delivered right to your doorstep. But before you hit “Add to Cart,” here’s what you need to know about buying a couch online in South Africa.

Trusted Platforms to Consider:

  • Takealot: Known for its massive product variety, Takealot also hosts an impressive range of sofas from different brands, making it a one-stop shop for furniture hunters.
  • Superbalist: Specializing in contemporary designs, Superbalist features stylish couches tailored for modern homes. Their frequent online sales are a big bonus for budget-conscious shoppers.
  • Bash: Shop all your TFG brands on one user-friendly platform. (i.e. for furniture that’s @home Livingspace)
  • Decofurn Online Store: Offers the same great prices you’d find in their physical stores, with the convenience of sorting options by size, color, or style.
  • @home Online: If you’ve browsed their showroom but prefer to finalize your order later, @home’s website makes it easy to cross-check availability and even book deliveries.

Pros of Online Shopping:

  • Convenience: Browse and compare from the comfort of your home.
  • Variety: Access to a wider selection and styles than some physical stores.
  • Price Comparison: Easily compare prices from multiple platforms before making your choice.

Cons of Online Shopping:

  • Quality Assurance: You can’t physically inspect the couch for comfort or durability.
  • Delivery Costs: Depending on the store, shipping fees can add up quickly.
  • Returns: Returning a large item like a couch can be cumbersome if something doesn’t meet your expectations.

Key Policies to Check:

  • Return Policy: Ensure the platform allows returns or exchanges and inquire about any restocking fees.
  • Delivery Options: Look for white-glove delivery services that will assemble your couch instead of just dropping it off.
  • Warranty: Confirm whether the couch comes with a manufacturer or retailer warranty for extra peace of mind.

Online shopping is perfect for busy individuals who want to avoid city traffic, but always read reviews and check dimensions meticulously to avoid surprises.

Second-Hand and Custom-Made Couches

Sometimes, the best deals or most unique options lie outside of traditional retail settings. If you’re open to alternatives, and being creative with style, consider second-hand deals or even custom-made designs tailored to your preferences.

Tips for Buying Second-Hand Couches:

  • Online Marketplaces: Websites like Gumtree, OLX, or Facebook Marketplace often have excellent second-hand finds at a fraction of the cost.
  • Inspect in Person: Always visit the seller and inspect the couch for wear and tear. Check for structural integrity, stains, or odors before committing.
  • Negotiate Pricing: Most second-hand sellers are open to price negotiations, especially for quick sales.

Buying second-hand is like treasure hunting. You may need some patience, but you could end up with a high-quality piece at an incredible price.

Finding Custom-Made Couches: For those who want something truly unique, partnering with local artisans or carpenters is the way to go. South Africa has a vibrant community of furniture makers who specialize in custom sofas.

How to Find the Right Artisan:

  • Use platforms like Instagram or Pinterest to search for furniture makers showcasing their work.
  • Network through local markets or expos showcasing handcrafted items.
  • Ask for referrals from friends or family who have had custom furniture made.

Benefits of Going Custom:

  • Tailored Style: Choose your fabric, dimensions, and design to match your space perfectly.
  • Unique Pieces: Stand out with a bespoke piece no one else has.
  • Support Local Businesses: You’re contributing to South African craftsmanship and entrepreneurship.

Whether you’re buying pre-loved or going the custom route, these options are excellent for finding something special that aligns with your taste and budget.

Section 4: Maintenance and Longevity Tips

Keeping your couch in top shape doesn’t have to feel like a chore. With a few smart strategies, you can maintain that just-like-new look and extend its lifespan. Let’s dive into some practical tips to make your investment go the distance.

Cleaning and Care

Your cleaning routine will largely depend on the material of your couch. Here’s how to tackle cleaning for common upholstery types:

  • Fabric Upholstery:
    • Vacuum regularly using a brush attachment to prevent dust and crumbs from settling deep into the fibers.
    • For spills, blot (don’t rub) with a clean cloth and a mix of mild dish soap and warm water.
    • Consider using a fabric-safe spot cleaner for stains. Always test on a hidden area first.
  • Leather Sofas:
    • Dust with a soft, dry cloth. Use a leather conditioner once every 6 months to keep the material supple.
    • For small stains, wipe gently with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners that can strip the leather’s finish.
  • Synthetic Fabrics (e.g., microfiber):
    • Wipe spills with a lightly dampened cloth. Most synthetic materials resist stains, making cleaning easier.
    • If allowed by the manufacturer, removable cushions can sometimes be machine-washed.

When dealing with stains like wine, coffee, or ink, it’s smart to act quickly. Here’s a cheat sheet for common spills:

  • Wine: Sprinkle baking soda or salt immediately to absorb the liquid, then clean with a mild soap solution.
  • Coffee: Blot with a cloth dipped in a mix of vinegar and water.
  • Ink: Use rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad, but dab gently to avoid spreading.

Consistency is key—routine maintenance prevents grime from building up and keeps your couch smelling fresh.

Longevity Hacks

Want your couch to go the extra mile? A little proactive care can make all the difference. These tips will help you get the most out of your seating centerpiece:

  1. Rotate the Cushions: It sounds simple, but flipping and rotating your couch cushions weekly can do wonders. This prevents uneven wear and keeps them from developing saggy spots.
  2. Use Throws and Covers: A stylish throw isn’t just for decoration—it protects high-traffic areas from spills, dirt, and wear. If you have pets, consider a designated couch cover that’s easy to remove and clean.
  3. Protect from Sunlight: Direct sunlight can fade fabrics and dry out leather over time. Position your couch away from windows or use curtains to reduce UV exposure.
  4. Mind the Frame: Every six months, perform a quick check of the frame. Tighten screws or bolts, and if you notice any wobbling or creaking, address it before it worsens.
  5. Add Feet Pads or Rugs: Protect your floor and reduce strain on the couch’s legs by using felt pads under the feet or placing it on an area rug.
  6. Control Humidity: Excess moisture can promote mold growth, especially in humid climates. Using a dehumidifier can help maintain an ideal level of dryness, particularly for fabric or wood-framed couches.

Think of maintaining your couch like maintaining a car—it’s all about small actions that prevent bigger problems down the road. Treat it right, and your couch will reward you with years of comfort and style.

Conclusion

Choosing the right couch comes down to balancing comfort, style, and your budget. It’s not just a piece of furniture—it’s the centerpiece of your home, where daily life happens. Take the time to research materials, sizes, and designs that fit your lifestyle and space.

Remember, a couch is a long-term investment. Whether you’re after sleek modern finishes, family-friendly durability, or something in between, prioritize quality and practicality. Explore your options, check reviews, and don’t rush the decision. A well-chosen couch makes your home feel complete.

Your perfect couch is out there—happy hunting! And hopefully it will bring many happy memories, and not a lot of fights!

PS, I couldn’t resist to show you guys this cutie – while you’re at it, you might want to consider your cat.

Then in the afternoon I went to my mom to teach the rest of my classes.

Since then I have basically moved all my food over to her house and started cooking there as well. I'm also going there to charge everything.

There's no point even using the gas when all the food needs to be kept cold so it needs to be done in one place.

For the water, I now have a system. We flush the toilet with pool water. Wash ourselves and dishes with tank water. And drink from the little tank.

Nicky has also adapted and is enjoying Granny's chairs.

Oh, and I've also been restyling furniture in my study. If the light is in front of me, it is better. I've been dealing with work assessments.

But we can't wait for the lights to come back on and running water.

Until then, I'm super grateful for family.
