Winter holidays are coming up soon – have you thought of what you are doing to keep your kids occupied? The 2021 Rebecca Page Get Crafty Summer Camp from 12 – 16 July includes over 40 craft classes for kids 7-12 years old – including one taught by me! There will be sewing, crochet, paper crafts, and more. And you can do it all from the comfort of your home.
I’ve always enjoyed arts and crafts but I never really got into it so much until I worked at Field and Study Montessori as a toddler teacher and had to do art every day! I was also responsible for a holiday program for each of the holidays where we really did some awesome crafts. I remember making aeroplanes and rockets from plastic bottles. Bird feeders from milk cartons. Potato creatures using different vegetables. Colourful effects with the minimum of equipment – just paint. There is so much you can do to produce spectacular results with the simplest of materials. I’ll always be grateful to my boss Julia for instilling this love of arts and crafts in me through this experience.
Arts and crafts also have a beneficial effect on children too. It’s good for their fine motor skills and cognitive development as they think about what they are creating. It’s also a way to improve your maths and language skills – compare sizes and talk about what you are doing using open ended questions.
Support what they are doing without too much interruption. As adults we tend to want to take over. Nicky recently had to do a water experiment for which I had some ideas but he made it clear that he had his own intentions. He came up with a magnificent salt dough creation with a volcano made out of a candle. I helped him making the salt dough but it really was his creation.
So what is on offer at the online camp? Here are some pictures to give you some ideas:
I suppose you might be curious to know what art activity I will be presenting? A very simple one! Three easy ways to make dinosaurs.
All you’ll need for my activity is the printout (which you’ll get with the class), coloured and white paper, paint, bubble wrap, a paper plate, foam/felt (or you can use coloured paper) for the shape dinosaur and pegs. I recorded a video of myself making all of this stuff on my balcony and I’m pretty chuffed I managed to pull it off. I also did an introduction and conclusion inside upstairs (while Nicky was playing his X Box downstairs!)
So go ahead and check out all the amazing crafts your kid can do and check out yours truly in action too. Like most of these online events, you can watch classes for free for 24 hours after they’ve screened, after which you need a VIP all access pass to watch the crafts when you want to. I will update this post closer to the time on the time and date of my class. In my opinion this online crafty event will be just the thing to keep the kids busy.
