What would you do if your Gogo was going away for a few days, leaving her Spaza shop behind? Why, take over the shop, of course, so that you can make lots of money!
Tumi thinks she has the perfect plan: she and her cousins (Mpho and Lefa) will run the show with lots of extra services like dog washing, baby sitting and car washing. Of course, they hadn’t factored in how all of this was going to work together, and the result of their efforts is hilarious.
Here is an extract from the book, at the height of the madness:
The noise the two women were making brought Sisi running around the corner.
Tufts of her hair stuck up straight in neatly divided portions on one side of her head, and on the other side of her head the new sleek braids flowed down past her shoulders.
“Tu-me-lo! What’s going on here?” she gasped. The two ladies stopped their argument and gaped at Sisi pointing an Afro comb in their direction.
“Sorry, Sisi. I promise I have it under control.”
Using her fingers, Tumi counted out the correct change and handed it to the lady, then fetched the toilet paper at the back of the shop and pushed it forward to the waiting customer.
Phew!
“Sorry about all the noise, mma,” said the angry lady with a wink, pleased to have finally received the correct change.
Sisi shook her head at Tumi. “Explain yourself,” she said through gritted teeth. She fumbled in her apron, looking for her phone.
Suddenly they heard Mpho screech loudly: “No, Chief, come back!”
Just then the big dog, slathered in soap suds, came bounding around the corner, ears and tail flapping, and barged straight up to Sisi. Shocked, Sisi turned and ran for her life.
Mpho appeared, panting and on the verge of tears, clutching the small, wet dog firmly in her arms.
“Go save her!” she instructed Tumi, gesturing in the direction of the big dog’s playful barking.
“We are so grounded,” Tumi wailed, starting to run after Sisi and the excitable dog.
Beep, beep, came the sound of loud hooting from the main gate. Car horns blared non-stop. It sounded like a riot was starting. Tumi and Mpho peeped around the corner. At the entrance stood Lefa and Themba at the front of a very long queue of unwashed cars and combis.
One man stuck his head out of the window of his car, pressed the hooter loudly and started chanting: “Give back my money, give back my money,” and soon, two more strangers joined in.
Panicked, Themba dropped his bucket and ran off down the street.
“Sorry, Lunch break,” Lefa yelled, also dropping his bucket. He dashed through the gate and locked it behind him, just in case.
Lefa ran up to where the girls stood, barely able to catch his breath. The three of them raced around the corner so they’d be out of sight. They could still hear hooting and chanting at the gate. Poor Sisi was still trying to get away from Chief.
Looking across the yard, hands on her head, Tumi couldn’t believe the chaos around her.
Everything had fallen apart.
Would you like to know what happens next? How did they get out of this mess and how did it all end when Gogo came back home from her choir trip? You’ll have to read the book to find out.
