If you were wondering what’s the difference between a WordPress page and post on a website, let me clear it up for you. Blogging was originally designed for posts, but pages have their uses too.
Pages are static
Pages are often evergreen, and they are important cornerstones of your site. You’ll see pages often in the menu e.g. your about Page and your contact page. They’re always going to be in the same spot on your site (unless you update the theme or the page itself).
Why we need pages
These kinds of pages are really useful as they give visitors important information about you and how to get hold of you.
Posts are updated
Blog posts are constantly updated (or refreshed) with more content. The whole blog changes are more are added on. You’ll see on SA Mom Blogs how my latest posts are ordered, and this will change over time as more are added.
Why we need posts
- Search engines like fresh, updated content.
- You can organise your posts with categories and tags and it makes it easier for your visitors to find your content. You can also do this in the menu.
- Get people to comment on your posts and start a conversation. Ask a question at the end of your posts.
The URLs look different
A page url has your website and then the name of the page, e.g. https://samomblogs.co.za/contact-me
A post might have a longer URL which you can customise in the permalink. I use the category first and then the name of the post: https://samomblogs.co.za/win/win-r500-with-pna-for-fathers-day.html
Here’s a video to show this in more detail:
Hope that cleared it up for you! We’ll always need both pages and posts on our blogs, they just have different functions.
