{Guest Post} Best Free Reading Apps

May 10, 2020 by Heather Step 1 Comment

Today’s guest post is written by Melica Metheba.

Teaching children requires patience and understanding.

But it’s completely normal to get mad at them at times. You can easily teach them and improve their reading skills with apps specially designed for kids.

These apps are super engaging and child-friendly. They steadily get their attention and, in no time, hook kids in steady learning of the English language. These free apps are not just recommended for home study but also for school time.

I have prepared a list of apps for every stage of your child’s learning journey. And the skills exercised in each app are carefully outlined. With this list, you’ll be exposing your kids to unlimited learning.

Best Reading Apps

These apps are a good companion and smooth guide for your kid’s improvement in letter recognition, writing, reading, and sentence formation. It is exciting to get your child to graduate from one app to the other. The experience is invaluable to every parent and teacher.

ABC Kids

ABC Kids is a good teaching app for kindergartens and toddlers just starting. The app has features of all shapes of letters and also help your child relate these letters to phonic sounds.

ABC Kids also aids children in writing. They get to trace letters using the arrows provided. The app improves the overall phonics, letter recognition, and tracing skills of kindergartens.

Kids get to receive prizes like toys and stickers for completing the tracing game. The app gives them the drive to trace and write English alphabets even on paper. It is completely free and you won’t make any in-app purchases.

Exercised Skills: Tracing, phonics, and letter recognition

Sight Words! Kids Learn

Sight Words is a wonderful app for kids. It has audio features that boost the learning procedure. Academic games like jigsaw puzzles and hangman are also included for leisure. And the graphics is suitable for kindergarten.

Kindergartens have vast interests, and it’s usually uneasy to keep their attention for a long time. Luckily, this app has a variety of activities to get and keep them focused for hours.

They get to hear and pronounce new words. This makes them familiar with letters to the point that they can write letters and make use of new words in speech.

Not to worry, this amazing app is available on the Apple Store. The free version contains words 1–25 for free.

You have the option of purchasing additional word packs. Every set of words takes your child through an advanced journey of unprecedented activities that would yield commendable progress.

Exercised Skills: Sighting words

Spelling Bug

If your child can comfortably sight words, the next step would be bugging them to spell the words. Follow up with the Spelling Bug app to avail your ward a spelling practice with over 90 words.

The app provides pictures for every word provided. It has an audio feature that pronounces the word just like a teacher would do and offers your kid the letters to spell accordingly.

The benefit is that the app tasks your child to spell correctly to get approval to the next word. With this app, your kid is sure to start spelling in no distant time.

Exercised Skills: Alphabet sounds and word spelling

Rivet

It is advisable to get this app immediately your child is done with the spelling bug app. Each app is a follow-up, so the learning process has to be taken one step after another to yield optimal results.

Incredibly, Rivet has over 3,500 books for your kid, all for free. Rivet is structured in levels just like mobile games; each new level is an advancement of the other. However, you may decide to search for each book or level without the order but your kid may need help to read properly.

The app also offers kids the excitement of tapping each word to hear their pronunciation.

It has a special school-like feature where kids can build their profile and earn reward badges for each progress recorded. This incites interest and helps them focused to earn more badges.

Happily, getting this app is a walk in the park. It is a free download from Apple App Store or Google Playstore. The app doesn’t work on all types of devices. You may want to check their list to verify if yours is compatible.

Exercised Skills: Listening, reading, and cognition

Starfall Learn to Read

For lovers of kid series, your favorite actor can now teach you how to read the right way. Starfall Learn to Read is a reading app for kids. Zac, the rat, makes learning fun but progressive.

Each section of the app contains a vowel sound and its related spelling. The concept is to aid kids in understanding the difference between spoken and written language.

Starfall Learn to Read app is beginner-friendly for English language learners. Kids can see, touch, hear, and master spellings and sounds through the activities of the app.

Exercised skills: Reading and mastery of spellings

Sentence Maker

As your kid advances in reading and writing, trying out sentence formation would be a lot easier with a sentence maker app. This app uses real-life pictures in place of animations.

The app is beginner-friendly starting with simple phrases then advances into greater activities.

It also contains sentences and word hints to improve learning. Memories are highly valued with the app. You can attach pictures and voice activities to keep a record of the progress.

Exercised Skills: Simple sentence construction

Partners in Rhyme

Ever caught your kid with a partner in crime? Now, this a partner in rhyme. Your partner would be here for you throughout your rhyme journey and beyond. No one ever stops learning rhymes.

The app aids children in improving their rhyme skills.

Partners in Rhyme app has features that will get your child rhyming within a short time. It features four child-friendly games for engagement and picture mode to help to get rhymes right.

The app generally advances the phonological alertness of kids. It sharpens the imagination and creativity of kids. They have to think up rhymes rather than simply memorizing them the old way. Getting to form rhymes at a young age is amazing and mind-blowing.

You can download this app for free on Apple Store.

Exercised Skills: Forming rhymes

Futaba

Futaba is an advanced app for vocabulary enhancement and language development. The cognitive activities of the app are stress-free and engaging.

It does this by displaying pictures on the screen. And from word options, you choose the correct word to earn points. The app is motivational and fun.

Exercised Skills: Language development and vocabulary enhancement

Chatterpix Kids by Duck, Duck Moose

You can now improve those super creative drawing skills of your kids with the Chatterpix Kids app. The app allows you to upload pictures and drawings, then animate it by recording your voice. Kids can animate the drawings with poems or reading passages.

Chatterpix Kids by Duck, Duck Moose can be used in schools to enhance the creativity of pupils more engagingly and amazingly.

Exercised Skills: Creativity, fluency, and expression

Final Words

These apps have been selectively picked to give you the best results. They are worthwhile for kids. The apps are arranged in order of progression, each app features a certain stage of language learning. You can start downloading them to unleash the great help it will offer your kid.

In a bid to protect your personal information and privacy choices, it’d be great if you go through the privacy policy of the app developer before downloading any of the apps. Some apps take and share activities of their user, but this could be modified only if you go through the privacy policy.

What can I say about Rustenburg.. Rustenburg has What can I say about Rustenburg..

Rustenburg has massive mountains. They are beautiful, but difficult to climb.

The chess was challenging and Nicky got 4.5 out of 9 rounds, ending in 42nd position.

My hire car struggled up the hill and the clutch started smoking. After that I came early to make sure I got a parking spot at the bottom.

The electricity was intermittent. Out Guest house had a generator which they turned off at night so Nicky had to make do with a small portable fan.

Despite all this, we are grateful for precious moments which made this trip worthwhile.

Friends that we made and spent time with

Meeting your opponent that you just played at Nando's.

Jumping on trampolines and having fun at Sun City. I lay on the beach while Nicky and Deacon did the slides.

At the airport Nicky had fun walking both ways on the treadmill and Chelsea joined him too.

All in all I'm also super grateful that we made memories and to be home safe.

Would you like to create content but you lack foll Would you like to create content but you lack followers?

There is another option.

User generated content is where you produce content for brands, and it really doesn't matter how many followers you have.

Lakeisha Mugo from Kenya has put together a UGC guide that will give you the plan that you need.

What I liked about this guide:
📱No fluff, real steps.
📱Great ideas for engagement and what really makes a thoughtful comment.
📱Loads of templates for everything including letters to brands and even for feedback on your work.
📱Africa specific and relevant.
📱How to make sure that you charge according to the different levels of UGC

It's all up on the blog! So go ahead and read it.

It's that season where we are going around looking It's that season where we are going around looking at high schools.

I know. Time flies. How did we get here?

I loved the quotes on the walls and the art work of the students. If I had to do school again, I think I'd do more art and cooking.

What would you do?

Anyway, let's hope Nicky gets accepted somewhere for next year. These applications are a lot of work. But I've done 3 of them now.

Nicky really likes this school. And of course he went straight for the chess.

Ask Chat GPT to make a caricature of you based on what it knows about you. You'll get a better result if you tell it what you do. The first attempt was slide 2, it thinks I am a doctor. And I never ask it medical questions.

After working from my mom's home, I had a new appr After working from my mom's home, I had a new appreciation for my work space.

But I needed to do something different. I needed to turn it around for the light. But the alarm antenna stuck out in the corner.

I was busy doing a blog post on bringing nature into your home and I got inspired to put a green feature there and bring in two flower pots. I also got some baskets to clear the clutter.

You have the power to rewrite your story and create something beautiful.

You just need that push to start.

Update on Survivor PE: We have intermittent water Update on Survivor PE: We have intermittent water but no power. Lastest news is we might have it by Thursday but I'm not holding my breath.
I wanted to do laundry today and brought the maid to my mom's house and everything but because it's a cloudy day the solar is only on two dots so we've got to conserve power.

When the city tells you that you're not going to h When the city tells you that you're not going to have power for two weeks!

A huge pylon collapsed due to vandalism, wind and rust.

And then your water goes...

You freak out and then you make a plan.
For the first morning, I hot spotted.

Then in the afternoon I went to my mom to teach the rest of my classes.

Since then I have basically moved all my food over to her house and started cooking there as well. I'm also going there to charge everything.

There's no point even using the gas when all the food needs to be kept cold so it needs to be done in one place.

For the water, I now have a system. We flush the toilet with pool water. Wash ourselves and dishes with tank water. And drink from the little tank.

Nicky has also adapted and is enjoying Granny's chairs.

Oh, and I've also been restyling furniture in my study. If the light is in front of me, it is better. I've been dealing with work assessments.

But we can't wait for the lights to come back on and running water.

Until then, I'm super grateful for family.
