This rather cute children’s book found its way into my inbox and I felt I had to take another look. It’s called “The Jellyfish Jiggle” and there are three copies that I’m giving away in this competition.
Jules the Jellyfish is not quite like other jellyfish. She moves a bit differently. The other jellyfish don’t quite understand her and she feels like a bit of a failure because she doesn’t fit in. Even though her ballet teacher encourages the other jellyfish to try her moves they don’t accept her.
It’s only when she meets OctoRocto, the musical octopus, that she finds a friend who encourages her to let go, be herself and have fun.
This is a lovely message for all children when we don’t quite feel like we fit in – all about accepting yourself and when you do that, others will accept you too. I also think the illustrations are beautiful.
The author of this book is Kayla Diamond. She is proudly South African but is currently working in Qatar. This is what she says about how these books came about:
So, why children’s books? Well ever since I was in college, I have wanted to write one, but I didn’t quite know *how*. I was inspired to write my first book ‘GLOW’ when I was sitting on a beach and saw some children playing with glow toys. One wasn’t glowing and seemed a little dull; from there the idea just kept growing. I wrote my first draft on a plane and kind of just sat with it for a while until I decided to just… go for it! Once I had the first idea for a book, and started seeing it come to life thanks to incredibly talented artists, the ideas just kept on coming and I am now sitting with 10 possible book ideas. The Jellyfish Jiggle is my second book that is currently out and plans for my 3rd one are already in the making!
My aim is to produce beautiful books that inspire a love for early literacy; based on topics that both children and adults can relate to.
