Are you looking for some natural solutions to your health problems? Or perhaps just to have some relaxing scents wafting through your home to calm your body and mind? I’ve recently discovered the interesting world of Young Living essential oils and the multiple benefits of using them for various purposes. You can use them too and discover how powerful aromatherapy really is.
The best way to experience essential oils is to try them out and that is what I have been doing, targeting my particular problems.
Starting with sleep: I am using lavender on my pillow and Stress Away on my feet at night. Since my husband’s passing I have had real problems waking up in the early hours of the morning and not being able to get back to sleep. I’m finding that the lavender in particular makes me feel very relaxed and helps me fall asleep.
The other problem we’ve been dealing with lately, and I’m sure moms can relate, is sitting half the night with a snot nosed kid that can’t breathe properly. We recently spent a weekend in East London and Nicky had aforesaid snotty nose. And I was sharing a bed with him. Of course there was no sleep going on. In desperation at about 11:45 pm I woke up my sister in law to bug her for some Vicks Vapour rub which helped a bit. But the next night at home I could get the diffuser going and put in some drops of RC oil and we all had a good night’s sleep, thank God. Subsequently Nicky passed on all his germs to me and I’ve been using it now.
I was privileged to meet up with Jen Jordan from Young Living Essential Oils who had some personal experiences to share too.
Initially her sister kept sending her oils and she wasn’t interested. She put them up on a shelf somewhere. (They only came down when she had indigestion at a family event and her sister insisted on shoving lemon oil with coconut oil down her throat, and amazingly it worked!)
The crux came when she was pregnant with her third child. She had life threatening issues which had previously been kept at bay with medication. She was then told that the previous medication she had used for her other two pregnancies had been deemed unsafe and was put on new medication. This made her very uneasy because who was to say, six years from now, whether that medication would be found to be unsafe too? She said “the scales fell from my eyes” about how much trust she had placed in medicine and the pharmaceutical industry.
As a self proclaimed nerd, Jen sat on bed rest and started doing some intensive research into natural methods and came across essential oils. This turned out to be what really worked for her and her family.
Jen was very through in her research and quickly discovered that not all essential oil companies are created equal. In fact many add other chemicals to the oils or distill the oil more than once.
This company is unique because it has a “Seed to Seal” approach where superior seeds combined with organic uncontaminated earth and water are sealed up in UV protected bottles.
Young Living is a company where the essential oil is really the essential oil without anything added to it. Apparently if you leave it open the whole thing will evaporate (unlike fatty oils like olive oil which don’t, but funnily enough you can add them to your essential oil to apply topically e.g. if you have a sore knee). With this company the oils can be ingested like food, they can be sprayed aromatically, applied topically or diffused. They may come in different bottles for different purposes but it’s the same oil.
Jen also gave us a bit of a walk through of the more popular oils and their uses:
Lavender is known as the “Swiss army knife” of the essential oils because it has a lot of uses. Best known is its ability to make you relax and that’s why you find it in so many baby products, because we want our babies to sleep right? I’ve been putting it on my pillow at night to help me sleep.
Historically it was used to cleanse, calm and promote skin wellness.
Lemon:
The lemon essential oil is actually made from the rind of the lemon which has all sorts of good health benefits. You’d think it would be acidic, which is what the inside of a lemon is, but actually the rind is alkaline. So it’s really good for heartburn. Lemon has also been studied for potential antiseptic properties and potential effects on immune function.
You can also use it around the house for cleaning and air purification.
Peppermint:
Peppermint is one of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion. Scientists have researched its effects on the liver and respiratory systems. It has been known for centuries to improve concentration and mental accuracy.
Cederwood:
This is another good alternative for sleep and you can put it on your pillow or use it before bed with a diffuser. The cleansing and moisturizing properties associated with Cedarwood also make it a great addition to your favorite skin care products.
DiGize:
DiGize contains Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Lemongrass, Anise, and Patchouli oils plus Fennel.
This has 3 types of Eucalyptus oils and for South Africans is a bit similar to Vicks Vapour rub. RC can help support a healthy respiratory system or create a relaxing environment where we can breathe easily.
Jen has used it for years to support her daughter’s respiratory system. She puts it in a diffuser and puts both the diffuser and her daughter in a little tent and that sorts her out. You can also put it on your chest, back and feet.
Purification:
This is a good air freshener. It has some citronella in it as well which makes it excellent for deterring mosquitos as well. It also has lemongrass, rosemary, melaleuca, lavandin and myrtle.
Panaway:
A good one for relief for joints and muscles. It’s a relief blend of wintergreen, clove, peppermint and helichrysum.
Frankinsense:
There’s a reason baby Jesus received this essential oil as a gift back in biblical times – Frankincense was considered more valuable than gold and used by ancient cultures to ease many problems. Scientists have studied it to examine antitumoral, immunostimulant, antidepressant and muscle relaxing potential – as well as potential effects on the limbic system of the brain, hypothalamus, pineal gland and pituitary gland.
Because Frankincense has an earthy, grounding fragrance, it’s excellent for diffusing during prayer or meditation for resolve and intention.
Thieves:
This has an interesting name for a reason. It is inspired by 15th century French thieves who formulated a special aromatic combination while robbing the dead and dying. And so that is how this oil got its name. It supports your immune system and it’s good thing to have around in flu season. It’s a traditional blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, bark, eucalyptus radiate and rosemary.
Stress Away
A calming blend of copaiba, lime, cedarwood, vanilla, ocotea and lavender. Lime and vanilla help for relaxation and copaiba and lavender assist with restoring emotional balance.
Aromaease
It contains peppermint, spearmint, ginger, fennel and cardamon. It’s a lovely minty, fresh aroma for your home.
This graphic below shows how versatile the oils are for fitting into your life and supporting your needs, in this case work.
So how do you go about getting your hands on these essential oils?
Young Living is a direct marketing company which means, yes you could purchase them from the website, but it would be better to sign up and get the discount as an individual distributor.
Follow these steps to sign up:
- Go to the Young Living website to sign up. Click on the flag and scroll it down to the globe:
