Educational apps are the new way parents are handling having their children at home during lockdown. We feel bad enough putting our kids on screens trying to get some work done, at least some of that screen time must be educational, right? Smartick covers the mathematical side of children up to 14 years and you can win a three month subscription to this service with SA Mom Blogs.
Three years back we tried Smartick and it didn’t really work for us. There were a few tantrums when I tried to make Nicky do Smartick before he had his screen time. Maybe I handled it all wrong. Maybe it was just the wrong time. But for some reason, this time, it’s working. He is really enjoying doing his Maths on this app.
Nicky is actually pretty gifted when it comes to Maths. Ok, I’m his mom, so I’m a bit biased. But he always asks me “Give me a sum, Mom!” and I have to give him something to work out. And not just single digits. He wants triple digits. He wants division. He wants it all. I have to scale his enthusiasm down a tad, because Maths is like this awesome country for him and he just wants to do it all. But we have to take it step by step. And for me, and especially the circumstances we find ourselves in now, we need all the help we can get.
Smartick is a program where you enter the child’s date and then they start doing sessions on the app for 15 mins a day. The parent is then emailed with their progress, showing how many correct and incorrect items they achieved.
Once the exercises are done there is another virtual world they can enter.
One section is a further lot of Maths exercises.
Nicky decided to do decimals. This is really higher grade stuff, dividing by 100, but he is up for the challenge….
In another section they participate in Maths competitions, almost like a boxing match.
They can also personalise their avatar.
Parents around the world are recognising that we just can’t do this by ourselves and we need a bit of technological help. I recently read another blogger (Nisha) from the US who wrote a post called “Homeschooling sucks: lessons learned”
I went from having a full time job, two kids in school and daycare to suddenly having what feels like three full time jobs. Even if I’m doing them all from home.
But being somewhat resourceful, it hasn’t all been a loss. I’ve learned a few things along the way:
Putting your kids on a tablet and telling them to use only educational apps is in fact, very educational. My kids are genuinely learning a few things from these programs. The really excellent part is they email you with your child’s progress every few days. Whether or not they were supposed to answer 500 questions in a single week is certainly up for debate, but woah, at least they learned something. (In case you’re wondering, I broke down and paid for a homeschool app, IXL, for about $23/month. Totally worth it.)
So that’s about R400, which is also what you’ll pay for Smartick if you pay for one month for one child. It gets cheaper if you have more kids and you pay quarterly or annually. It makes sense to take out the annual plan, because you’ll pay less per month (see picture below).
