Did you know that the average person misplaces up to nine items a day? And topping the list of these items are keys and cellphones? Don’t feel like it’s your age to blame; apparently Millenials are twice as likely as Boomers to misplace items. You have the ability, however, to take back control of loosing your keys and phone with this simple Orbit device. Today on the blog we will be reviewing it and showing you how you can avoid this annoying time waster of losing your keys or your phone.
So why do we forget where we’ve put things? Has the multi-tasking of our “always on” modern age caught up with us? We just don’t pay attention anymore and the memory slips? Sometimes we are so busy thinking of the next task that we’ve forgotten where we’ve put that phone and so we spend an average of two and a half days per year looking for it.
The best way to remember where you’ve put something is to have a regular place to put it. I always try and put my phone on my computer or next to my bed when I’m at home, and in my bag or on my desk when I’m at work. I have a series of hooks for keys.
Then life happens. The thing that should be in it’s place… well, it just isn’t. And then you waste precious time looking for it. Or you keep your Telkom line active for R250 every month just to find your phone when you can spend R355 once off at Takealot on an Orbit.
The hilarious thing that happened when the Orbit was delivered by Gamma Tek was that I just could not find my house keys. I had arrived, and could open the gate with my car keys for the delivery guy, but I couldn’t get into the house.
I have a huge bag. I love this bag. This bag has been my go-to container for all the various teaching aids, Nicky’s toys and other items the past few months. But it is a nightmare when you want to find your keys. I upturned the entire bag and still did not find it. Eventually I found it in the car. I just made it in time to pick up Nicky from school.
This bag also did hospital trips with me. I used to visit Brett at night and then as I left I would actually sit down in the well lit reception area and spend a good few minutes finding my keys and the card to get out of there. No ways was I going to sit outside my car in the dark doing that. It simply would not be safe.
Recently I decided it was time to organise my life. I got rid of all the useless and unknown keys on my keyring and combined what I needed to enter ths house and drive the car. Unfortunately in South Africa you need 3 keys just to get into your front door and then another two for the back door. Not to mention the swiping thing for the electric fence, the key for the enclosed gate motor, and then the alarm remote and gate remote. So, it might seem like a lot to a foreigner, but this is what we have to do these days to be secure in this country.
Part of trying to be more organised is having the Orbit device around to help me find my keys and my phone when my memory lapses. The Orbit device was attached to this keyring. The device also comes with two very useful items: a spare battery and a clip attached to a chord. Remember that huge bag I told you about? Now I have a plastic envelope, should I need to find a card, and something to clip this chord onto. So I shouldn’t have to scratch in the bag anymore.
So how does the device work, and how do you set it up? All you do is go to your phone and search for “Orbit” and you’ll see that recognisable black circle symbol. The app will prompt you for details as you set things up and you’ll also need to confirm your email address.
To link your phone and the device you follow the prompts and press the side button hard for 5 seconds and then it will set up.
To find your keys press “Find Orbit” on your app on your phone. To find your phone, press the button on the Orbit two short times and your phone will ring, even if it is in silent mode.
Be aware though, that your Bluetooth needs to be working and you need to have your internet connection going as well. If you are in an area with bad reception, you’ll have to take that into account. Since I’m more likely to be losing my items at home, and my internet is good here, I’m happy to say it suits me quite well. Sometimes when I’m out and about I lose connectivity but I normally find with this old phone that rebooting helps a lot.
Ok I attempted to do some videos about the Orbit. As you can see, they are far from perfect, but they are real. In this first one, I demonstrate the Orbit. But if you look closely you’ll see I had a wardrobe malfunction. In the second video Nicky helps me hide the keys and the phone (he loves hide and seek). I had to enlist his help to press the Orbit button (why are kids better at technology than us?) and we also had a phone call in the middle! But we were not hiding the keys all over again! So here you go, here are the videos:
How many times have you lost your keys or your phone? And when has it made you late for something important?
The Orbit is available at Takealot.
