Have you ever just had one of those days? Where everything seems to be going wrong and your brain is just not functioning so well? And you kind of want to look your best but land up with egg all over yourself? (In my case, red paint). Well I had one of those kind of days recently. But when it was all over I managed to get the paint off, and was able to wear the item of clothing again.
In my particular line of work (teaching two year olds) we do art Every. Single. Day. So if I’m not gluing something in I’m probably painting it. I normally start my morning off mixing three bowls of Tempera paint with water. This is the kind where you do have some hope of getting it out of your clothes. With the acrylic kind, you’re stuffed. I will never forget that time when I got acrylic red paint over a little kid’s lovely white jersey and that never came out, but that is a story for another day. (After that day I sorted the paint cupboard very throroughly between the kind that does, and doesn’t come out).
Anyway on this particular day I was doing splatter paint flowers. That’s when you use a toothbrush to splatter paint on your flower. Cut it out, add a pipe cleaner stem and pom pom centre, and you’re sorted.
Except today, I somehow managed to upturn the red paint. It bounced on the floor and went under the table. I got down on my hands and knees to get the bowl. At this point I should have looked where the paint landed before I got on the floor with my white pants. Because, silly me, I put my legs straight onto the spot where all the red paint was strewn.
Oh no. There I was, with red paint all over my paints. And I had a birthday circle coming up. The kind where the parents come. So the best idea of taking off the pants immediately and soaking them in water was not going to work.
And dabbing a bit of water on it was not working either. I just had to suck it up and continue the day in my red splattered pants and let the paint dry and establish itself.
When I got home I put it in a bucket of water and left it there while I tried to think what to do with it. Water in and of itself at this stage was not going to do the trick.
It was while we were making supper and I was looking for an apron that I came across my Dr Beckmann apron that I had received two years ago with a blog drop of several stain removing products. I’d actually forgotten about the stuff and they were sitting at the back of a cupboard somewhere. I hauled them out. There were two I thought I would give a go. The one was tea, juice and red wine and the other one was ink and felt tip pen remover. (Although I see they do have a paint one too. For some reason I couldn’t find that one)
The first one did not help but the ink one sure did! I could see as I poured it over the stain, how it was starting to lift. I had to put quite a bit on, in two attempts and lots of rubbing, but I was finally making headway.
When I’d rubbed as much as I could I put it in the wash and also added their Glowhite sachet, which is quite a useful product for brightening up your whites when you’re tending to always use a cold wash, as I do.
Hanging those pants out on the line, I could still see a very faint area where the stain once was, but it was a huge improvement. You would really have to look closely to see it. I was suitably impressed that I could wear them again.
