I don’t know about you, but every time Nicky’s birthday rolls around, it comes with its own sense of stress. Yes, it’s a fun event and we love it, but the planning involved on top of everything you have to do, is hectic. Last year we had a science party which was fabulous, but I had to get all those chemicals and equipment sorted and ready. This year we just decided to have some fun and let someone else handle it all – let all the boys run around and shoot each other with Game On Laser Tag here in Gqeberha/ Port Elizabeth.
What is laser tag?
Laser tag “is a recreational shooting sport where participants use infrared-emitting light guns to tag designated targets.” according to Wikipedia. Each person has an infared sensitive signaling device to shoot and register hits. It’s been used since the late 70s in the US Army for combat training and the first toy was released for the Star Trek movie in 1979.
Why laser tag is better than paintball
If you’ve ever played paintball before you’ll know, although it’s also a lot of fun, it can be painful, especially for kids, to get shot with those pellets, and not to mention all the mess of the paint. You’ve also got unlimited ammunition at a touch of a button with laser tag (no need to reload). Laser tag is also set up on a system where everything is recorded so you can get those stats and nifty certificates for each kid at the end of the party.
Mobile laser tag and venue or venue
This company is very mobile. Paul arrived with his computer and printer as well as all the things he needed to set up obstacles for the kids. (They looked like triangular tents that the kids could hide behind and shoot).
One thing I will mention here when you are party planning is to make sure beforehand that your party doesn’t fall over a load shedding slot. We had ours in the evening (Nicky wanted the thrill of the lights and to see the people’s teams – which are identified by the lights) and it was important to have those outside lights on. Also Paul needed electricity to print the certificates. (Update: 2024: he now has his own electricity to print!) At another party Nicky went to recently they had the generator going, which also works well. He’s been to other parties where they had this during the day – that works great as well.
They also have venues that they can use if you would like that. I know we’ve had another party at Bushwackers which was loads of fun, and they also use that.
Scenarios – fun games
They played a variety of games in the evening where they divided the kids into teams (and you can see which team is which by the lights on their head). I wasn’t really concentrating on what was going on because I was chatting to the other adults (the cool thing about having someone else do activities at your party) but at one point I heard that they were going to do “Humans versus Zombies” and they could choose which they wanted to be. “Zombie? Good choice!” was heard! The last human standing gets a certificate for that game as well!
All ages – parties or team building
Laser tag is not just great for kid’s parties, it is a great way for your staff to let off steam. The company also organises team building experiences.
Probably the best testimony comes from the kids. They had so much fun they weren’t all that interested in eating the birthday cake. They just wanted to carry on shooting each other, lol. Nicky was so happy he says he wants to do it again next year!
