“Breakfast is considered an important meal because it breaks the overnight fasting period, replenishes your supply of glucose and provides other essential nutrients to keep your energy levels up throughout the day.”
I am sure most of you have skipped breakfast at some point, perhaps you even skip it regularly BUT for most of us, even if we intentionally skip breakfast we know there is a meal one visit to the fridge away. This is not the reality for many many South Africans.
There are scores of children who go to school starving, not just hungry but starving and there are countless more who don’t even make it to school because they simply do not have the energy to get there. Those that do make it to school often struggle to concentrate and battle to make it through the day.
Kellogg’s are trying to change this through their Breakfast for Better Days project. They provide a number of schools throughout the country with breakfast every single morning. The schools are chosen in conjunction with the Department of Education and are provided breakfast by Kellogg’s and lunch by the Department of Education.
The school we recently visited has seen huge improvements in the attendance of the pupils, their concentration and energy levels. The children are excited to come to school and are actually now able to focus on their learning because they are being fed!!!
Part of the campaign was that we had to intentionally go without breakfast – it was not all that much fun. I eat breakfast every morning so by 10h00 I was not in a happy place at all and was ready to eat the entire bakery at PnP!!!!
