When I was approached by Disney Africa to take part in the Doc McStuffins Pet Vet Drive by decorating a kennel, I jumped at the chance to enjoy an art activity with my son.
Perhaps I forgot for a moment about the art evening at our school when they failed to auction off the younger kid’s (2-3 year olds) decorated swan (full of handprints). Or the hours it took to touch up a wooden kist that I did with the Grade Ones (and those kids are 6/7 years old).
No, I blindly agreed to paint a kennel with a three year old.
He was very excited about all the equipment and took great pleasure in lining it all up as he does with his cars. He even consented to wear the overall (only once) and he looked super cute.
I outlined a car for him and got him to paint inside. Paint marks outside the lines? I had to turn them into other things – such as a tree and a road.
We did a flower on the other side. (That’s for me. I love flowers).
On the back I attempted to draw a dog. But it looked like the outline of a cat with a snout like a pig. Of course Nicky got enthusiastic with the paint again and I had to turn a blue mark into a butterfly.
We stuck on the little circles in various places – this was easy to control. Put the circles on newspaper and only give him access to one colour at a time. He also loved the glitter. Unfortunately, unlike me, who likes to softly sprinkle, Nicky prefers to dump the lot all in one spot. So, unless I wanted to keep some of it, I had to make sure that was fine before I handed it over.
When it came time to add glitter to the actual pictures I started with outlining the flower with glue, with the idea of making a sparkly border. However Nicky thought this would be a great opportunity to put his hand into the glue and move it around. He then put his hand on the dog kennel roof. Oh well. Now we have our handprint to go with the paw prints and human prints I was trying to create. At least it’s a authentic touch.
For the front I was a bit lost on what to do so I printed some quotes about dogs in koki.
I felt pretty much inferior compared to the artworks other bloggers were putting out. I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
From Cassie Kelly a beautiful explosion of pink on the roof of the kennel.
From Karen du Toit, cute motifs on the roof and front of the kennel.
I know there were more – so please send me your finished pics and I can add them to the post!

I know, that’s the most important, that they enjoyed the activity.
