There was plenty to keep both adults and kids busy at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand this past weekend at Comic Con Africa and their new addition, Kids Con. We spent our heritage day at the event and took a lot of photos to mark the occasion. It was quite an experience and definitely worth the hype!
I told Nicky that if he wanted to he could dress up and he decided that he wanted to be Tin Tin. Of course, you wouldn’t know this, because Tin Tin wears normal clothes, but we went to a lot of effort to gel his hair upward in the right position. He also took all his Tin Tin books out to decide what colour clothes Tin Tin would wear and settled on a blue top and brown pants. We even took Mad Dog with for the ride in the car (which was as far as he got) to be Tin Tin’s dog Snowy.
Comic Con is definitely an experience and there are loads of interesting people walking around in various costumes. I was actually a bit nervous about all the walking dead type people walking around who looked a bit scary for kids to see but I suppose it added to the eclectic atmosphere. Some people really went to a lot of effort to dress up and Nicky liked the Bubblebee transformer.
After having a look around we went to the Kids Con section. I was very impressed with the Hasbro stand which had multiple activities going for kids. They have a pledge going at the moment about making time for play and their games certainly help this process. Nicky is quite used to playing the adult version of Monopoly but they had a Junior version on display. I liked the little counters: they were quite cute. Other games we played there included flushing the toilet (a big hit with Nicky), crocodile dentist, an operation game, climbing in a tent and the ever popular playdoh. They also had another version of the Connect 4 game we have been playing (where you have to get four colours in a row) but here you had to throw the balls in. The assistants were very helpful too.
One game that deserves a special mention is one that involves walking through the poop. Nicky was blindfolded and had to avoid the landmines, which, if you feel them, feel just like play doh. I was thinking that you wouldn’t need to go far at our home to play this game with our dog around, I just wouldn’t recommend the blindfold! Kids at this age just love the toilet humour too.
On to the Mattel stand where you could choose Hot Wheels or Barbie activities. Nicky played with some cars and then they also had a cool printout where you could choose your car and frame. After that it was time for an ice cream reward.
We then went to the Lego area which was very vast and we did not even get to do all the activities. We took some pics of the super Star Wars items and then Nicky went to the Lego pit to build more there.
We then went on to have some food and walk around a bit more and make sure that we could get a chance at the Nickelodeon stand where they were doing science experiments and making slime. This was quite an operation as they were pretty busy and it was third time lucky at 1:30 when we finally managed to get in to do this. But it was totally worth it as they did their experiments and played with the slime.
Lastly we went back to KidsCon and did some Nerf shooting. Another queue to wait in but Nicky really wanted to do it!
How this kid still had energy after all this I have no idea but here he was jumping around the corridors!
ComicCon is definitely an experience not to be missed, if only to check out everyone attending in their creative outfits. I think next time I should really dress up. I think Wonder Woman would definitely suit me, having watched the movie recently, she is really a heroine I look up to for her ability to fight for those who needed it and deflect all those bullets with her awesome outfit.
See you next time!
